Celery! Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
This is some lightly cooked celery I had for breakfast the other day in Kuala Lumpur. I was going to the local wet market with @iamjadeline and she took me to this place across the street for breakfast first. Shopping takes energy!
Whenever anyone asks me what I want to eat, the answer is usually meat and vegetables. At this time of day the restaurant was also making lunch and this lovely dish appeared. It is crispy and has a very light sauce. Most importantly, it is celery!
Celery is one of my favorite foods and has been all my life. When I was obese and eating it, the whole world would be thrilled. “Sharon might lose weight now! Look, she’s forcing herself to eat celery!” No one would believe my that I loved it. Now that I am thin, no one cares.
But in Thailand for the last two years, I never ate any celery at all. I could not find it in the markets. I did see it in stores, but it was always imported and very expensive, so I did not get it. I never saw it in any food stall.
Here in Malaysia they make celery in a dish all by itself! Just when I think I could not be any happier with this place, I am!

What is a ‘wet market’ ? I love celery too, it’s such a great dipper. You can’t really beat that crunch flooding your mouth with refreshing juices either.

A wet market is a term here, in the PI, and in Thailand for a market that has fresh food, like raw meat, and fish, eggs, and veggies you can buy and cook yourself. A regular market would only have prepared foods normally. Night markets (at night!) can have both.
I think this is right, but it is also flexible. If I say wet market - I know there will be meat vendors, and that is why I go. I just went this morning and got 2 pork chops, they cut for me (minus flies) and they are huge! 9 myr which is 2.19 usd. I cannot wait to cook them. This should be 2-3 meals unless I am starving and wolf them down.
So the wet markets and night markets are just as I imagined they might be from movies and tv and stuff… so excited to see them myself. I’m glad you got the meat without the side of flies, although a little extra protein punch, I imagine they don’t taste all that well. Is there ever any music at these markets, you know performers that are performing? (I suppose that would be more like California farmers markets).
