Are The People With Whom You Began Your Journey On Steemit Still Around?
In the time that I've been around here I've witnessed all of the major ups and downs on this platform. Some of the people that I started with have either left completely or have stopped participating even as they have their stake intact.
2016 was a time when many early adopters came on board hoping for Steem blockchain to become the solution that not only aided content discovery but rewarded content creation empowering the decentralised web amongst other things. It has indeed evolved a lot over the past two years. The potential for it to grow to provide a basic monthly income and better token distribution is still there.
People have been tremendously positive about the growth of the platform and some of us early adopters are around because we believe in the long term success of this blockchain technology. Why shouldn't we be? Some of us stuck around in its lows and benefitted over a longer duration proving that long term success is possible.
The economics and reward mechanism of course has been highly debated and still needs work but these things can be improved over a period of time.
From my standpoint some of the key early adopters with a vision for the platform and interest in it's growth are still around. Many users who came for a short term gain or speculation have come and left. Perhaps they were never seriously vested into the growth of this technology.
I think the next few months will be crucial as we cross major goals such as HF20, Communities and SMT. The volatility of the price has certainly affected many users to the point that they feel it's not worth posting currently. However, as we've seen in the past, those who stuck around during the low phase have gained in many ways when the prices went up.
There are of course several other reasons why someone has joined Steemit and left. I'm also aware of situations where people stopped using the platform even when they were earning a decent amount by sharing their content. It's a different experience for everyone!
But for now answer this if you can: If you've been here for atleast a year or so on this platform you've witnessed the most of the highs and lows. What is your perspective on this have witnessed all that you have? Are the people who referred you here or ones with whom you started using this blockchain and dapps built on it still around?
Or did they give up too soon and leave? Why do you think you're immediate friends stopped using?
What are your expectations for the next few months leading upto the SMT launch in March, 2019.

@firepower might not be posting much anymore, but I'm still here. I'm a bit more focused on my internet radio show at the moment, and life handed me a pretty severe setback recently, much like it did you with your motorcycle accident. At some point we need to catch up again, my friend.

Many of the people I began with in the first wave (2016) are still here in some capacity. Some have taken sabbaticals of different lengths but usually always return...this speaks to the strength of Steemit. I’ve seen my own active following shrink significantly but am okay with this because I’m enjoying watching newer users make their mark. Overall, I’m hopeful for the future of Steemit although I think it will be more difficult for individuals to build a following as Steemit grows. That photo brings me right back to Amsterdam!
I agree. In fact I can remember a handful of people who've done that I'm always happy to see them come back and try to support them again.
Not only this. Active curation has dropped significantly with drop in price. It seems to be a trend. Hopefully this will change with time.

I'm on the platform from May and I know you asked people who are here longer but I'd like to answer anyway..
I see that there are still Steemians around who joined in 2016 and they keep building their communities and many of them support newbies so that they don't leave the platform.
In that short time that I'm here I've seen also many people leaving. The price goes down and they get demotivated. I can understand them if they're looking at the short term gain.
I'm looking at the long term and I believe right now it's the best time to be around, post and engage with others to get noticed. Once the price goes up, many of them will return and it will be more difficult to build your own community so this is what I focus on now..
And even if the price goes down, most of us earn more here than on any other social media platform..
For me it's important to have fun and this is why I stick around!
Thank you for responding and I'm glad you did. The price drops affects curation significantly as people have chosen bid bots (these days) over curating themselves so organic content discovery is harshly affected. When prices goes up it takes lesser vp to distribute rewards which makes it easier to curate as people who depend on income from Steemit are directly affected by how much VP they use.
However, we're still a young platform but in another 2 years we need to get beyond the issues we face today including poor curation at price drops. I'm optimistic that we shall.
Thank you for sharing your view with me. I understand the point with bid bots but I'm lucky not to depend on income from Steemit so I still curate manually. Yes, I can curate less posts (unfortunately) but I do enjoy reading them and leaving a comment..

Great article! I have noticed a LOT of decreased activity. My theory is that when STEEM started going down, a lot of people were no longer motivated since the rewards weren't as high. IMO, this is when rewards are better. It's a great time to be on Steemit and the core of us who believe I think will find a lot of longer term success. It was such a cash grab for so many people who posted garbage content that they gave up easily when their posts weren't getting any attention. They didn't have the drive to better themselves or their posts in order to continue to see the benefits of being here on this site. Cheers!! :)

yea very true! it will spike again with all the people and the greed when we see prices come up. for now, I'm loving the cheap prices of steem and will be continuing to load up.
Higher the STEEM price, greater participation as well as spam. It's natural that good and bad elements come back to the platform with the change in price. I think we'll get beyond these current issues over the next 2 years.

The people I came across when I started a year ago are still around but some who joined last autumn have stopped their activities in spring, obviously due to varying reasons.
I reckon that "normal" blogs with grown communities are still working well, from that point of view Steemit has some issues, in other systems you don't need to wait two weeks to be able to comment. Thus, Steemit can be an add-on, not an alternative to an unpaid blog.
We're severely lagging on the onboarding process for sure. However, it should get resolved in the near future. I hope that when I write something like again a year or so down we'll see different responses.
Most of the people I have boarded on steemit has left except a few. A few includes @itravelarts, I really like her blog and I am very proud of her. Most of them came here for the sole purpose of earning money, and never focused on creating quality content. That was one of the main reason for their leaving.
Today itself, I told my friend about steemit and he was excited to get started. But thanks to steemit’s slow sign up process, he didn’t able to receive the OTP. He was very disappointed after that. I don’t know what impression does that leave on his mind of steemit.

@firepower -it's been just 2 months, and honestly I joined steemit only because of monetary gains and had my doubts in the first month, but during this time have met some real gems and talented people and now I ain't even thinking of money, just enjoying my journey here, and I can see myself growing in terms of knowledge and as a person. I haven't learnt this much (on so many different topics) in all my life than I did in just two months.love this community. Thank you for reminding me why I here.😍

It's good to see your response. Out of the hundreds of people I've helped on this platform, many established themselves quite well but many were obviously here just to make money and had nothing interesting to contribute and didn't feel the need to stay invested. In the recent bear run I saw many power down and simply leave and that did piss me off quite a lot. As an investor who understands and believes in the underlying technology and how it can impact people positively over a longer period of time, the short-sightedness of several people quite frankly put me off. Nonetheless, that's all part of the journey as a user myself and same for everyone else. I continue to support people whenever and wherever possible. These are the best times to earn tokens as the price is really low. When price goes up (which everyone including myself is waiting for) it'll continue benefitting everyone. Stick around if you can. :)
That's quite the same situation here. I've onboarded tons of people and many stayed, invested, some made quick bucks and left sadly. However, it's been a great learning curve for sure and has taught me a lot of things as well.
As far as account creation goes it will be cheaper/faster to create accounts in the near future until then maybe you can get him one using Steemconnect with 6 steem or so. Maybe he could pay you for creating an account for him.
I have figured out something. Now when I on board new users on steemit, I simply tell him to forget about money for the min. of 6 months. I cut all their expectations about money making for the initial period so that they don’t leave and tell them to engage with the community and make connections.
One of my friend @nishal, has recently joined and she literally forgot about the money part, she is posting regularly and doing well.
What I think is posting and engaging with the community regularly has proven to be the success mantra on steemit. Money will follow when you grow with people.
That’s right! I will ask him to make a paid account. He was so interested that he was ready to pay me ₹500 to create the account but I insisted to make the free one. If it still doesn’t work, I’ll make a paid one for him.

Yeah. Infact I left a comment on her blog yesterday asking her to redeem the rewards. You should tell her how the wallet page works now that she's earned some STEEM.
I learnt about this steemit platform in Dec 2017 and I am regular since then. I met @himshweta on this platform. She advised me how to use this platform and earn. But after few days she disappeared from steemit. The last post she posted 4 months ago was that she was ill and sick. I wish her for her good health. And expect she will return someday on steemit . As she used to earn handsomely.

The one who introduced me to this platform never joined it.
I believe Steemit is super slow compared to other social media out there..
ONO is an upgrade and lightining fast and has addressed many issues of steemit.
Once Dan Larimer launches Steemit 2.0
I believe even more people will leave
We're the fastest out there. I'm sure there is room for improvement but as proof of concept we're working wonderfully.
The economics is totally flawed. That's going to take a while to fix but it still can be fixed. But will it? I've no idea!

Conjecture mostly at this point. I don't see any EOS based platform doing anything better over Steem based platform overnight. Those who ditch one for the other may find it hard to come back if the new one doesn't work.

My perspective is that we've lost a lot of good people as development has taken far longer than any of us expected. But the journey has been incredible and there are top quality people here now. When the price increases, many others should return as usually seems to be the case. Until then, we keep building.
You said what I'm thinking most of the time. That's the best anyone can do in these times I feel. Development has certainly taken longer than expected and we have another 6 months to go before we see all the we need to take things to the next level. I hope when that happens people who have left will feel like coming back and also bring others with them. I'm hope we can make that happen as a community. :)
