Raphael was one of the important old masters of art who formed the trinity of the Grand Master along side Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo. His full name was Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino but was popular known as Raphael. He was an Italian painter and architect who was born in 1483. He was also of the Renaissance movement and was popular for the ease of composition in his works as well as the clarity of forms.

Raphael was quite famous and influential in his lifetime but didn't live so long as he died at the age of 37. But nevertheless, he was very productive and made hundreds of works while he was alive. He worked for some influential people back then including two Popes and their close friends and relatives.

Raphael was orphaned at the age of eleven. He had began to learn painting from his father. But after the demise of his father, he was placed as an apprentice under the Umbrian master, Pietro Perugino with whom he spent just 4 years.

Raphael had a likeable personality as he was kind and courteous. This made him quite popular in Urbino and earned him more clients. His likeable character also got him about 50 students who helped him finish his projects quickly.

His style was influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and this could be seen in his paintings with fine shading and powerful contrast between light and dark areas which could be seen in Leonardo da Vinci's works too.

When he was alive, he and Michaelangelo constantly competed for commissions and their works were always compared.
Despite this, he secretly admired Michaelangelo and even painted him in his greatest work. After his death, his rival, Michaelangelo, gained more popularity and influence with for almost two centuries before his works regained fame for their high qualities.

Raphael never got married but many affairs. It is said that his death was caused by a fever he had after having a night of excessive sex with his lover Margheritta. He couldn't tell his physicians the exact cause of his illness and was treated for the wrong reasons which led to his death.
