Samuel Palmer born 1805 was a British painter of visionary landscapes , etcher and printmaker, one of the key figures of the nineteenth-century English romanticism.
He was born in London's Nevington district. In his youth he painted mainly medieval buildings and churches. Palmer was influenced by Turner's paintings after visiting the first exhibition of his works at the Royal Academy in London.

In 1824, Palmer met W. Blake, who had a strong influence on his work in the next 10 years. Then he joined the group of artists who called themselves "The Ancients".
In the early 1830s Palmer painted watercolors, thanks to which he gained great popularity in England. In 1837, he and his wife went on a honeymoon trip to Italy for two years. Here the artist made many sketches, based on which he later created a number of canvases. S. Palmer was a talented teacher. Returning to London, he spent two decades in private teaching of painting.
After the artist’s death, his works were forgotten for some time. A new discovery of his work begins in England in the 1950s. The influence of Palmer is felt in many works of masters as Graham Sutherland, Paul Drury, Robin Tanner, and others.
