Master of Snow Painting - George Gardner Symons

Those who enjoy winter pictures will come to the work of George Gardner Symons with enthusiasm. By many he is considered one of the very few American masters of snow painting. Born in Chicago in 1865, Symons was a member of the Royal British Artists and of several other distinguished organizations and won many medals and prizes.

'' Gardner Symons is a living proof of the theory that art is an intervention of personality,'' says Marie Handley, writing in the Outlook. '' You might call him a realist, for he is one; vigorous, direct, clear cut; or an impressionist for light and air are put into his canvas to stay. But there is something more besides the robustness, besides the fine color and glittering light; it is a sort of inside principle informing his work and creating its special character, a broadness, a joyousness, a hopefulness, a certain wide-eyed, jubilant outlook. Beyond and back of all this prize winning there must be some real and higher reason for picture painting that should never be lost sight of. We cannot hope to paint more beautifully the wonderful moving clouds, the distant uprising hills, not the nearby trees with the sunshine shimmering through their tender foliage. The great gift of the artist is, I think, to be able to select from the over-abundant storehouse of nature and then devoutly hope that through his eyes many shall raise their head and seek and find.
