这种被称为东鹃的杜鹃花来源于日本，所以称东鹃，或称东洋杜鹃。它由三种原生种杜鹃自然杂交而成，植株低矮，叶嫩绿有光泽，花期早春开花，花色比较丰富，有红、紫、白、粉白、嫩黄、白绿、镶边、洒锦等。这是园林品种，常植于公园、行道，成片盛花期也是早春一景。
