Dealing With The Vomiting Dog At Home
It seems to happen all the time. It is a holiday weekend, and your dog begins vomiting. You live too far away from a veterinary hospital, or you are not able to contact a veterinary service by phone. Vomiting can be caused by many different medical conditions, and it may be difficult to determine the underlying cause without and hands-on examination and some testing done by your veterinarian. Here are some of my recommendations that you can do at home until you can take your dog to your family veterinarian.
(1) DO NOT GIVE over the counter medications like Pepto Bismol or Imodium. If your dog is suffering from gastric ulceration, this kind of products is going to make the ulcers worse.
(2) Do not feed your dog for 12 to 24 hours. Need to give the gastrointestinal tract time to rest. You can offer small amounts of water if your dog seems thirsty. Instead of water, you can also use Pedialyte of cherry flavor Gatorade.
(3) Give your dog Pepcid AC (Famotidine) every 12 hours for the next 24 hours. You can buy Pepcid Ac over the counter at any pharmacy or grocery store.Please be aware that this product is available in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets. Use the graphic below to determine how many pills you dog needs.
(4) After 24 hours offered a small amount of rice (50%) and boiled boneless chicken (50%). If not evidence of vomiting you can provide more 4 hours later. If the dog seems to be improving, you can keep using this diet for several days then wean slowly into the regular diet.
(5) If after 24 hours of withholding food and using Pepcid AC your dog still vomiting, then is very important you schedule an appointment with your family veterinarian. Your dog is doing to need a complete physical exam, blood work and probably radiographs to get to the bottom of the problem.
