Erusal cowardly review: a Slenderman-like game
Before Erusal
Back when I was a teenager, I'd lock myself up in the living room post-midnight while beating Silent Hill for the Playstation One. It was terrifying even when I had already beaten it before, so watching television for five minutes was a must... For every three minutes of playing.
Silent Hill was the most terrifying game I've ever played to date thanks to it's immersive ambience and incredible story, but it was even more impressing when it's graphics were as good as consoles could get. Maybe playing it so much was what turned me into a videogame coward.
Enter Erusal
Erusal is a game where you walk around finding notes with a little bit of lore on them while fleeing from a monster. Basically Slenderman. Except the yelling monster is a completely normal-looking girl (who yells like a banshee).
Funny thing is, there is some plot going on. Apparently our girlfriend dumps us and we also get ditched by a friend who we had plans to hang out with. So we go out solo to keep our minds busy.
Things go from bad to worse way too quickly
We are driving around (not really, it's just a still picture) managing to have fun when we almost get our neck ripped apart by some wire. "Wtf" crosses our mind while we lose consciousness.
Then when we wake up, there's a woman outside digging a hole. It looks bad, as if she planned to drop our body into it. At this point I am already very immersed in the story because I really feel as if I'm the character I'm controlling.
We finally regain control. At first, we're just standing there, looking out the window. There's the woman. She can't see us. I suddenly notice - she's just standing there. That's as bad as it gets.
To confirm what I'm suspecting, I quickly strafe left. Just enough to get the window out of sight. Then I strafe back right.
The girl is gone and it's going to instantly teleport around chasing me. As a player who gets completely immersed within the character, this is absolutely terrifying. But still, I'm the player, not the character. So I do what I always do in this scenario: ALT+F4.
