What Inspires Me contest by @felichi

Hi every one, hope we are doing ok?.
This is my entry on the contest what inspires me, organized by @writingnreviews. I also want to thank @disconnect for sharing this information.

What inspires me?

In order for one to succeed in any venture, one must first answer the question: “what is your ‘why’”?

Your ‘why’ is that driving force that kicks you awake when you feel like enjoying an hour or two more of sleep. It is that goal that keeps you working, until you achieve it.

For me, my big ‘why’ is my Mum. Simple.

Growing up, I saw my mum bear the most unbearable of sufferings. She underwent the most harrowing of circumstances. She bore the heaviest burden. She was willing to do the most demeaning of jobs, just so that she can put food on her children’s table, and not watch them sent home from school.

Even as a teacher, mum’s monthly take-home pay was barely enough to bring her home, much less cater for the feeding, clothing, medical expenses, and utility bills for all six of us. So she had to add fruit trading in other to buffer up her earnings.

She traded on whatever that was in season: mangos, cashew, oranges, carrots, garden eggs, maize, you name it. She would leave for the hinterlands at the wee hours of the morning where she buys from the rural women, and brings home to “town” where we lived, before preparing and heading off to school. On returning from school, she washes her wares and heads off to the market. On most days, mum scarcely gets up to six hours of good sleep.

Being the first child, I began early to learn how to fend for myself, because I felt that was a way to ease mum’s burden a little. I learned to join her in the market after school hours and help her make sales as much as I could, while vowing to myself that I must get education and take mum off the streets.

Now, I earn enough to be able to send mum monthly allowances that help her stay home more often. She doesn’t have to hawk her wares as before; she now has a lockup store where customers could come and buy from her. All of my siblings now have completed university education and things are gradually looking up for us.

But I am not relenting. I need mum to retire completely and come stay with me. I need to place her on a fat monthly allowance. She deserves to see the world and enjoy the rewards of all her years of hard labour. She deserves, every day, to relax and be taken care of.

And until I am able to do all these, in the nearest future – all things being equal -, I cannot beat my chest and say I have ticked off my entire to-do list. Until then, the grind continues.

This is what inspires me.
