An ability aid for cards
Hi everyone,
One of my co-workers recently approached me about a small project. She has a friend that was involved in a pretty bad car accident this summer. After everything the doctors could do, she had to face the tragic reality that she was now a partial quadriplegic. She has retained partial movement in one arm and hand.
Anyway, I was told that she missed being able to play cards with "the girls", and asked if I could build something to hold the cards for her. Here's what I came up with.
Not being sure what to build,I did some web searching and found some simple ideas, but I figured that I could do something a little bit more creative than a 2x4 with a saw cut in it. Not to downplay that, it looks like it works like a charm, and sure wouldn't take as long to build!

To the shop I went, got my little box of scrap exotic woods to see what I had. A little bit of zebrawood left! Yay! I made a couple little feet.
Then I cut some Walnut, from somewhere in Central America, I believe.
Figured out the angles I'd want and did some gluing.
Now for some less exotic, probably very exotic in some parts of the world though, poplar. I made a sort of base for the cards to sit.
Added some more small walnut pieces to hold the bottom of the cards.
Sanding and sanding, then a bit more sanding
A few coats of oil really make wood look great!
I hope that in some small way, this person's life is made a little better. Maybe some day I can meet her and have a game of cards.
Take care everyone, thanks for reading my little post!

Nice mix of woods! I’ve never used zebrawood. Very cool looking. I’m sure the recipient really appreciated your handiwork.

Good job, she must love it.
Hopefully! I'll take it into work tomorrow and my co-worker can deliver it to her. Thanks skycrane

Elvis, this is SO GOOD like seriously, I'm tearing up right now. What a beautiful way to give back some ability to this woman!
Thanks tanglebranch. It is such a hard thing to go through, I hope she can get a little bit of "normal" back.
