420 Star Wars Spoof & How To Key Out 3D Objects for Outdoor Footage

This is a short I made with a DSLR and some cheap special FX with 3D Studio Max. The short is called Gourd Lord and is a spoof of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And WOW! I thought that film had a lot of controversy!!! The Last Jedi has brought chaos to The Force! Below is a tutorial on how to key out a 3D model when you have a green background. Guess what? You can't use green screen! Anyway, a lot of my friends thought this was trippy. Hope you like it!

How To: Key Out 3D Objects for Outdoor Footage
I downloaded a pumpkin and imported it into 3D Studio Max. (The pumpkin model I found for this blog is nicer than the one I made the short with. Oh well! Maybe if I do Gourd Lord Episode 2 I will use the better model). I like to use Active3D.net for ease of use. However I also have downloaded models from Turbosquid.com. They have a huge selection of professional 3D models.

Now that you have your pumpkin model in 3DS Studio Max, you want to set it up for keying. The first thing you will need to do is the change the background. Do this by selecting Rendering and the pop-down menu will show you Environment .

Now you have the Environment window open select Color

Now that you have Color Selector: Background Color window open you will see some slides on the left and bottom, but you will be concerned with the Red, Green, & Blue area in the upper right corner. You can use the sliders or the radio buttons to scroll to the number you need. But, I like to just highlight the number in the box and type in 255.

The red arrow points to where you need your red channel set at 255. The green channel has no arrow and is set to 0. The blue arrow points to where you need your red channel set at 255. The magenta arrow shows you the background mix.

This render shows the pumpkin with a background that you can key out on almost anything.
