How Were Napoleonic Armies Equipped?

in #uniform8 years ago (edited)

The Napoleonic wars saw the mobilization of armies of hundreds of thousands. Yet at the same time, it was before the era of mass-production and everything was essentially hand-made.

Also, many of the uniforms, especially those of the cavalry, seem extremely elaborate. Making one set would consume a huge number of work-hours and be very costly if sewn by hand.

So how was this achieved? Was there a large-scale mobilization of workers into some kind of government factory system? Or huge number of small-scale artisans working in their attics? Or were short-cuts taken so the resplendent Hussar uniforms we're familiar with were actually simpler to make than they looked. Or perhaps in reality they were not actually that common.

Remember me in your prayers thanks.
