The Man With The Iron Mask

in #mystery8 years ago

A masked man inhabits a closed room in the Bastille prison. The man uses a mask made of ferrous metal. He was always seen being watched and guarded by the prison guards. He was never seen removing his mask until the end of his life. Who exactly is the mysterious figure behind the mask ?

In 1698 the Bastille prison located in Paris, France was the arrival of a mysterious prisoner. Bastille prison itself is a royal prison specifically built for people who are considered defiant to the king. The prisoner was a man wearing an iron metal mask. Another version says he wore a black mask made of velvet. He is known as "The Man In The Iron Mask".

Actually this masked man has been a government prisoner since 1687. Previously he was also detained in the fortress Pignerol, Italy. From then on he always wore an iron mask. During his time until the end of his life The Man In The Iron Mask is always accompanied by a prisoner who is believed to be his personal guard is Benigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars for 34 years.

While in prison, this masked man has only one identity. He is disguised by the name Marchioly identity. The Man In The Iron Mask was in jail during the reign of King Louis XIV (1643-1715). The man who always wore this iron mask was eventually died on November 19, 1703 (at the time of death there are mentions he was 45 years old, there are also mentioned his age 60 years).

It is said that as long as he is in custody no one has ever seen him take off the mask, until after his death also arose many stories, rumors, and the debate about who actually the mysterious figure behind the mask. A writer and philosopher named Voltaire in his Questions sur l'Encyclopedie (published in 1771) who also served as a prisoner in the prison for 1 year revealed that he once extracted information from people who had served the masked man in prison.

According to Voltaire's story, the masked man possesses a large, gallant posture. Age is also estimated to be young. She was wearing lacy linen and playing guitar. Voltaire suspects the man wearing the iron mask is very similar to King Louis XIV.

Meanwhile, in the late 1840s a writer named Alexandre Dumas mentioned that the man with the iron mask is actually an identical twin King Louis XIV. Another testimony came from a royal author during the reign of King Louis XIV. He is Joseph de Lagrange-Chancel.

He asserts that Benigne Dauvergne de Saint-Mars, who is a former governor of Sainte-Marguerita and also a man who always accompanies The Man In The Iron Mask, treats the masked man with utmost respect. Even call him "My Prince" or my Prince.

It is said that the other guards also treat this masked man with the utmost respect as to make a king. In fact, according to the stories the prison guards who serve him continue to stand until the masked man invites them to sit down.

The special treatment received by The Man In The Iron Mask raises a lot of speculation and guesswork. One of the most famous is the story that the man behind the mask is actually a twin of King Louis XIV.

King Louis XIV who did not want to share his power then ordered his twin to be away from the palace. He was later raised in the home of a noble and treated with respect.

But he was never told his true identity until one day someone told him of his identity. Unfortunately, this leads to his arrest and detention. He then spent the rest of his life as a prisoner by wearing an iron mask until the end of his life.
