Preserving Stories. Why my mom joined Steemit.steemCreated with Sketch.

in #life10 years ago

My mom wrote and posted her fourth story for Steemit a couple of days ago. She’s very enthusiastic about Steemit. I think it’s insanely awesome she was willing to join the platform that I am so passionate about and write her own stories. In fact, I’m over the moon!

My mom and me in Egypt (2003). As a historian where else would you take your son.

The birth of a new Steemian

I helped my mom sign up to Steemit in November. We took a lot of time coming up with a cool user name and we settled on @clio.

Clio is the muse of history in Greek mythology. My mom studied history and was a history teacher for many years before becoming the principal of the very same school where she worked. The username made a lot of sense! She is now retired.

She didn’t start writing for Steemit because of the financial incentive. No, she started writing after I explained to her that the stories in the blockchain are forever preserved. (thank you @mamasitta for this amazing insight).

I think this idea resonated with her as a historian because many stories have been lost in the past for various reasons. Hence! A new Steemian was born!

A little help with formatting her stories

Every one or two weeks I get an email with a new story from her. I read the story (of course!) and then I either visit or I use TeamViewer (I take control of her computer over distance) to help her format the post for Steemit on her computer.

She has some problems with the editor. Mainly linking pictures is a bit difficult but I’m sure if we do it a couple of times more she will be able to do it by herself. In some way, that’s a shame because it’s a lot of fun preparing a post with her.

After the post is released into the wild she’s as calm as a cucumber about it. She does her own thing and only checks the story occasionally.

Not me. I’m refreshing her page every time I can. I want her to do well. Refreshing doesn’t help regarding that but every time she gets a new vote my heart make a little jump (I guess it’s addicting somehow).

I’m also hoping this blatant promotion will help her get some more followers. (If you can’t promote your own mom than what can you promote…right?).

Why older people should write

mom
By the time this guy can read he will have plenty of stories to choose from.

Older people have interesting things to say. I love listening to their personal stories about when the world was a completely different place but I also like their views about current events. You can’t beat them for life experience. All this is very valuable.

My mom said she would love to read the personal stories from her parents and grandparents if that was possible today. But it’s not. They either did not write much or the writings are lost.

Her grandchildren won’t have that problem if she keeps writing. All they need to know is Steemit and @clio and by the time they can read I hope that her wall is filled with the most amazing stories for them to enjoy.

It’s the coolest thing.

Your mom seems very cool! I think it's great when older people embrace new technologies.

O she is! And I agree with you. I love it when older people make an effort to stay up to date :)

This is very nice story. Enjoyed. Really. :) Followed. See you again.

Thank you so much! And see you!

What a gem of a son you are! Just further goes to show what a warm hearted and caring individual you really are. Well, welcome mama "exyle" to Steemit!!!

Wish the both of you a great deal of success and good fortune here (which will happen anyways, lol).

Good times!!! :)

Thank you all for your good wishes. And ezzy and the others, you are right. Mark (exyle) is a warm hearted and caring individual (and sometime too modest for his own good). I will continue to write my stories and he will continue to help and encourage me if needed. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas time and a happy new year personally and on steemit.

Bless you, @clio. I meant every single word. So glad you are here to enjoy the wonderful world of Steemit! What an awesome boy you have there, fantastic job! Have the merriest of Christmas's and a happy new year. Look forward greatly to reading your blog in the future! :)

Thank you, man! You are the best and you are making me blush!

really great story!followed upvoted!:)

Thank you!

Nice to hear she's joined the community! I'll be following her, too.

So nice of you to follow her. Thank you so much!

Nice post. Say Hello to your mom from my side, you are right experience can not be beaten and this is all how we learn from our elders. upvoted followed.

Thank you and I will (but I'm sure she read your post already). It's hard to beat life experience that's why most will go to an older person to ask for advice for questions about life.

That's so awesome. Congrats on getting your mom started with Steemit. :)

Thank you! It's really fun to have her here.

You're such a good son! So encouraging. I'll be checking out your mom's stories too!

That so nice of you to say. thanks for checking out her stories!

Cool story! I like the fact that she was open-minded enough to try it! Clio has a new follower now (me)! : )

O wow! Thank you, Eric. She is very open minded indeed (not just about Steemit). Very nice of you to follow her as well.

I like this story!

Thank you!
