Arisarum Simorrhinum - probably the coolest wildflower around.

in #nature7 years ago

Once warm winter day we went for a little walk around. Just to catch some early flowers shots and see whats going on. When I looking for some mushrooms to shoot I saw those flowers.
And my oh my you should see my excitement! I had no idea what it is! Never saw them before, thought I do see the foliage like that around in many spots. I thought maybe it is some cool carnivorous specie!

I took some shots and went home to research my find.

It is Arisarum Simorrhinum. Not a carnivorous plant at all, but still a very unusual one. It comes from North Africa, but seems that it does likes Portuguese grounds and also Spanish.

It grows on roadsides, clearings and edges of woods. Likes sandy, well drained soil and I found it growing almost in pure sand near a building side. The flowers are about thumb side and have very short stem. Looks like they are emerging straight from the soil.

That's not a flower, that's a jedi!

Hahahaha :D
A miniature

but the force is strong with this one!

And there is many of them! A whole gang... more force.. :o

This looks very exotic!

It does... I was so surprised to find it :)
Very strange plant.

Weird plant for sure, looks like it is protecting itself from sun or rain with it's funny umbrella :)

It is and it does :) Could be from both actually... rainy winter but a very sunny spot.

See we've cracked it's secret lol

So boring after all..

Eventually you will stumble upon another interesting plant, that we can work on :)

Challenge accepted!

Can't wait :)

Oh jeez... now I really have to go looks for something..

woah... that looks so alien!

would you mind posting a pic of the plant as a whole? It's hard to imagine how the scale, but they seem to be very small?!

I wouldn't mind if I took it :p
I was so exciting I found something like that I forgot to get the "overall"look. I took those photos in very early spring. Now it is too hot and everything is dry.

They are rather small... thumb size for the flower maybe and the leaves are not larger than a hand... very short and low growing too with a bit of a heart shape. When they are nice big clump of them you can hardly see the flowers - they hide under the leaves.

thumb sized sounds a lot bigger than I had imagined them...

I did look them up on google and found some nice images for scale... and oh boy, these flowers could do with some googly eyes :P

that's a call to action @ewkaw

Hahahahaha :D OMG they look hilarious with the tongues out :p
"That soup was disgusting! bleeeeehhh"
"Mine was even worse.. bleeehhh"

now if only those weren't CG but actual real #GooglyEyes... hehe... just sayin... winkwinknudgenudge

Hahahaa I hear ya ;)

Very strange, but strangely pretty. Great shots!

Thanks! It is strange :) First time I saw one like that.

So rare flower

You know them?
I didn't know they grow here.

It's very beautiful, but in a strange way.

It is indeed. I found another one like that... a bit different shape, but also very cool. Strange plants grow in Portugal :D
