Ulog No. 10: "Making Story Stones"

storystones1.jpg

Our children at the Early Learning Centre will be reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?" by Eric Carle this coming week, so I thought of preparing activities that are inspired by this book that would make children busy and at the same time work on their colours recognition and vocabulary development.

One of the activities is called "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" Story Stones. To prepare this, I need:

  • black stones (preferably flat)
  • glue
  • contact paper
  • animal printables

So yesterday, I went to Cheap-as-Chips, Mitre 10, garden shop, aquarium, and pet shops to look for black flat stones, but to no avail. I found something that I preferred from Mitre 10 Hardware Store, however, the stones are sold in large quantity, where I will only be needing up 20 pieces. I decided I would just use what I bought from Cheap-as-Chips, because they're worth $2 for a small bag. I thought, "This will do."

I got home and printed out the animal printables. I cut them out and glued onto individual stones. I wish I had Mod Podge, which is a waterbase glue and sealer with a gloss finish. It would be easier than using contact paper. I have not used Mod Podge before, but other teachers recommend this in making story stones.

But anyway, I used what's available and what's more economical for me (also I need to promote sustainability - but in saying that, I should have just gone to the beach and look for stones that I needed). I am sure that these story stones will be used many times.

I made two lots of these, so that two children will be able to play this at the same time. The children who will be engaged in this activity can use the story stones for their own creative play or tell a different story other than the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear."

After making the stones as a story tell aide for the book, I am now thinking of buying the whole bag of the flat black stones I found on Mitre 10, which is worth $29, or I can just devote a time to look for stones at the beach. I want to make different story stones, where each one will have a picture of a character, an animal, a place or an object. This will be a great group activity at 'circle time' that I am thinking of introducing to my little darlings at ELC. I will put all the stones in a basket and will pass it around. Each child will take it in turns to draw one stone from the basket to add a sentence to the made-up story.

The children can also use the stones as a sorting and grouping activity. They can sort out the stones according to people, animals, food, etc. How children play and learn from these story stones is actually open-ended. When used as a literacy activity or in an imaginative play, the experience promotes creativity, vocabulary development, and communication skills. When used as a numeracy activity, it fosters problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

I would like to acknowledge @surpassinggoogle for his Ulog inititative because it helps us (Steemit users) write something about ourselves even on a daily basis. One of the dot points he mentioned about what should ulogs constitute is to:

"tell us how things didn't go your way and how you improvised or how you tired out"

In this post, I explained how I improvised my project with the limited resources available to me and from this, I was inspired and challenged to create a similar project but on a bigger scale.

The "U" in Ulogs means "You."

The following are some of my Ulog posts since I started #ulogging on 1st June 2018:

thanks for your mention @evlachsblog . You're always the best teacher in my heart

Thank you, @lantracy. That's very sweet of you to say that. I hope to meet you in person someday.

Oh you guys know one each other?!

We have only just met here on Steemit. I know that @lantracy is a teacher, too, that's why we connected easily.

Great idea. I’ll pass this onto my wife

Yeah, maybe your kid will want to help make the story stones, too. :-)

oh yes!
and I have a bag full of black pebbles :-D

I glued the picture first onto the stone, then put glue all around the paper before I put the contact paper. It works okay. But I think mod podge would be easier and less work.

I like the idea of story stones a lot!!! And I just realized that I didn't put my footer on the Ulog. What is going on with my brain? LOL

Thanks! It's worth the effort, especially the kids are loving the imaginative play using these story stones. I am going to make some more, and will even use the kids' faces and stick them on to the stones. I wonder if it will be well-received just like the ones that I made.

haha! The ulog footer is really cool! I like it. There are just probablyt too many things on your mind that's why you forgot to put the footer on your Ulog post.

This is a great idea sis and you're always creative and putting your heart on each activity you create for the kids...you're the best teacher, your students are blessed to have you sis!

Thank you, sis! My job is a ministry, too, so I give my 100% to everything that I do, sometimes even more if that's even possible.

What an imaginative idea! You just gave me a good idea to make these stones to keep my own li'l bananas busy over the summer!

Thank you for your feedback, Roxana! Just an advice, don't use very large rocks because they might crush your li'l bananas. :-)

Once again, excellent advice. I'm sharing your post with a friend (outside of Steemit!) to help keep little ones busy and happy.

Thank you. I'm sure your friend will enjoy making them with their children.
