Far from Perfect

Inspired by heroin chic, grunge, old film and 90's supermodels. Grain, texture, out of focus, smudged. Less perfection, more feelings.

I think with modern day photography, we are often too focused on trying to create the perfect image, have the perfect model, lighting, colours, framing and post processing, that we loose the feeling we were trying to catch. I know it isn't like this for everyone, but for me, portrait photography is all about getting the feeling across the screen, from me to you. I know it's very different if you work on the commercial side of photography.

Nowadays you can re-take an image endless of times and then use hours and hours on Photoshop to try and make it perfect. And I hate it! I'm not saying I don't appreciate having all that technology to help me, but I think it can easily go too far and miss it's mark.

For example, that first image is horribly out of focus, yet I somehow like it. If I had tried to take it again with the right focus, I am sure I would have lost the original mood and facial expression, it has happened to me a million times when trying to fix some "problem" with the picture, you just can't get that split second back again like it was.

What do you think about far from perfect images like these?

Sort:

IMO its just the perfect balance between erotisism and modesty. Its a very mighty thin line and I think you have it spot on.
Always an admirer of classical beauty (having grown up in Greece, and having visited all of the museums countless time) the naked form is always supreme, but without being provocative or "immodest".
You keep doing you. Very well made.

I'm always teetering on the edge of being too slutty, sometimes I go over, but I always try to bounce back immediately. A lot of people think that nudity = porn. There must be something wrong with their eyes, it doesn't matter how you try to explain it to them, all they see is the flesh they think is nasty, indecent and dirty.

The gritty textures added up to the flow of water gives the skin and the whole photograph a really visceral effect, it takes me by the gut and carries me far into dreamlands... Thanks a lot for sharing, this is absolutely gorgeous!

Namaste :)

What is perfection?

In our days of of fast autofocus, high ISO, multi MegaPixels, filters and all kinds of post-processing aids, almost anyone can shoot technically perfect pictures. Who cares? Where is the art?

Your series is absolutely stunning, as it fuels fantasies and transmits feelings. #3 and #4 are my absolute favorites, #5 seems to ask me about my opinion:

Great work!

It's better without. As soon as you sexualize the nude it becomes cheap and blasé.

I think I've seen one vaga picture that was artistic, but even in that one, the vaga was hidden in a shadow.

I prefer these raw images better than polished ones. I think they show far more of your personality than "perfect" pictures do. Really well done, these take me back a bit to some of the pictures my wife and I took back in those days. With no digital screen to check what you got, you just had to wait for the developer to send back whatever came out. It was always so nerve-wracking!

Thank you :) Did you take dirty pictures with your wife? ;) I could never get along with a film camera, I'm far too impatient!

We took all kinds, dirty and not :) My brother worked in a camera shop so he would develop everything free and discreet. The hard part was hiding them from our parents. Even though we were of legal age, our parents still didn't want to think we were like that!

They remind me of the shower scene in 'Psycho'. Especially images 1 and 2. I made a sculpture of it once so it is still fresh in my mind.

Oh you are right, I didn't think of that but yeah they kinda do look like that :)

@ammonite I had the same thought regarding the scene in 'Psycho'. You are totally right!

Very nice! It kind of reminds me of the shower scene in the Hitchcock movie "Psycho". Looks so great. Wonderful job. :)

Love these pics eve. Greetings from Venezuela!

Cold water? It's hot for me.

It was hot water, didn't want to get cold nipples.
