Early Bird Goes Skating

I've been waiting for this the whole damn winter and today was finally the day when mother nature provided the conditions for ice skating on the lake. Side note: the walkways are super icy too, could have almost put on my skates on the doorsteps.

First the winter was too warm and it snowed a lot, so instead of forming steel ice, you get this slushy, softer, air bubble filled ice, with a lot of snow on top. No good for ice skating even when they plough the snow away. Then it got really cold and the ice was technically strong enough, but then the surface was too bumpy. Then it snowed more and more, got warm for a few days, more slush on ice and water rising on top of it. No good. I had already given up on getting to go skating, but yesterday evening I saw a punch of people posting on Instagram that they had been skating on the lake. I was so bummed that I hadn't gone, you have no idea! I was beating myself about it like no other, it was borderline hilarious how sad I was that I didn't go check the ice during the day. But I had no idea, I was out on my balcony because it was so warm, and in no way did I think the ice would be good for skating.

Apparently having temperatures around +5°C for a few days melted the snow and slush on the surface of the ice just enough to smooth it over. The temperature drops below zero during the night and in the morning, we have a gorgeous ice skating rink on the lake!

I woke up 8am sharp, without the alarm, saw that it was sunny and immediately got up. I was on the ice by 8.45 and super happy about it. For the first half an hour, I was the only one in there. The weather, like you can see, was absolutely gorgeous, pretty perfect really, beside the crazy gusts of wind.

Ps. I had small talk with two separate people during the morning, I must be on a damn good mood!

Sort:

Well done for getting up early and exercising, and even more respect for talking to the public - 2 whole people eh! :D

I'm in such shit shape, it's horrible! Well the people did initiate conversation, but I did keep it going and not just answer with one word or mumble and skate away.

Best make it a daily event then, your bikini will thank you later :D

Yeah, I didn't think you'd be skating up to people with a 'gooooooood morning!'

My body is in bad shape more internally, thank god, than externally. I can still pull off a bikini! :D

'gooooooood morning!'

Oh lord, could you imagine me doing so even in your wildest dreams!?

It's what's outside that counts!?!

No, never :)

Wow that's great! I've never skated on ice! Doing it on a frozen lake would be wonderful!

Ice skating is awesome, and I think it's much less scary than rollerskating :D

The important thing is that the ice does not break! :D

It is nice particularly when the weather is as great is it is in @eveuncovered's pictures.

We went over to Lake Vesijärvi yesterday to find the ice in a pretty similar condition. The surface was too rough for skating but skiing was out of the question, too. It was good for walking. Took a picture of a hole drilled by an ice fisher and the ice was indeed of the porous kind formed from slush and about 30 cm thick. Great pics by the way! Was the skating trail made by the city?

I'm sorry to hear Mother Nature wasn't as favourable to you as it was to me. I had a hard time writing this in English when I wanted to use terms like teräsjää, sohjo and kohvajää. Yes the city takes care of the skating rink every year and they do a really good job at it, this is the kind of thing what I don't mind paying taxes for.

There are very detailed scientific classifications of different types of ice. But I haven't found any commonly used established terms for different types of ice. Can any native English speakers from Canada, the cold parts of the USA or other areas in the Anglosphere where winters are cold help? Is ice made up of frozen slush called snow ice or slush ice or what? What do you call the type of clear ice that has no bubbles or snow chrystals or anything visible in it that forms in lakes or the sea when the weather is calm and very cold and there is no precipitation?

The latter is called teräsjää or "steel ice" in Finnish. Frozen slush is called kohvajää or kohva.

See: http://lakeice.squarespace.com/types-of-ice/

Yes please someone educate us! I do think steel ice is the only one that works as a straight translation, that is why I used it in my post, but for other types of ice in English, or snow words too, I have no idea.

I think if seen such ice described as clear ice, which it is.

I think I wouldn't be able to do that... being on top of a icy lake, imagine if the whole thing breaks! Or even worse, imagine if only the part that you are standing on breaks and the water pushes you to another part that you can't emerge from because the ice is blocking and you drown...

That is entirely possible, and that is why you have to be careful and know when and where to skate. You know it's pretty scary when you are standing on ice and hear a soft crack when a new fault breaks to the ice, which is completely normal and is often just on the surface.

Nhaaa... The only ice I need in my life is inside my freezer and inside my heart

In front of my home I have same ice ... last day all was melt but in night all go ice :))

Dam a chatty Eve haha. Looks like a cracking day 💯🐒

Last time I was skating must be over 10 years ago. I would totally break some bones🙈
