All Aboard Birkenau - part 1

in #auschwitz8 years ago

It was a sunny day, a sunny and warm Saturday. Quite warmer than it usually is on November.

100 jolly good Steemians made their way to a summer camp called Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Not all had done their homework and new where they were heading. Somber surprises might lie ahead.

But it was a nice day. A nice day outside. First you would see a bunch of teenagers taking pictures on the train tracks, like we were in an amusement park.

Pose like it's going to be your new profile picture.

Our lot new better than that.

Surreal, is how I would describe it all at first.

The mood of the photos are just perfect... beautiful shots..

Thank you.

Btw, I stole some of your pins from @llfarms at Steemfest, they are gorgeous😍

Aahh which reminds me, @llfarms owes me pics of people with the pins! Glad you like them! It was Justine's initiative to bring those, and I'm also glad she did.

Oh, I don't think she took one of me! She might need a spanking!

I both feel good that I didn't go, because plenty of people came back with their spirits crushed... but at the same time, it's a powerful experience that I missed.

I think the last picture captures the mood quite well..

It all depends on the person really, but for me, it wasn't that bad. I actually want to go back on a really shitty weather, in a small group and early in the morning, maybe on a weekday to avoid all the other hundreds of tourists. Being with people you had already laughed for few days, wasn't really the best in terms of getting in the right mood.

That's some beautiful photography right there. The black and white conversion really works on these. I haven't gone through mine yet so I'm not sure how they've come out. You've tempted me to convert them now ha ha. Did you shoot B&W in camera?

I've got so much to process, not least of which is my memory of that trip. I can't get the hair and the shoes out my mind. Our tour guide was excellent; it felt like she really .. well, perhaps 'enjoyed' isn't quite the right word, but like it was her calling to retell these stories. I'm really glad I went.

Did we have the same guide? The blonde lady with the accent. She painted images with her words.

I think we were in different groups Adé. I should've taken the guide's photo just for memory. Oh well.

Thank you so much. For me, they looked way too happy in colour, wasn't the vibe I wanted to have in them. I did shoot in B&W mode, but because I actually shoot in RAW, they come up on the computer as coloured versions. I just use the B&W on camera as a guide so I can get into the mood when I shoot.

The hair was really one of the most concrete parts left of the horrors that happened in Auschwitz.

First pic i had to double Check if IT is from 2018 or 1945.

Did we learn our lesson humans?

Good, then I did exactly what I wanted to. I tried to make sure there aren't many visible modern elements in the pictures.

We as humans are far from civilised still.
