Plastic Bags--Nature's Way?
It is extremely common for people in America to buy plastic bags.
They come in all sizes and even in some colors,
and they get used for all sorts of things.
It seems incredible to me that one would
have to spend their hard earned cash for buying something that is
in such abundance, and that is so damaging to the earth.
Even more incredible, is buying bags to simply throw in the trash!
It's my experience that people keep their newly purchased box of
plastic bags in their kitchen, bathroom and/or garage,
so they can easily grab one to line their trash can,
specifically to throw away! Not only a bad investment,
but bad for our world as whole.
Another ridiculous scenario for purchasing plastic bags is to throw away nature.

At the @gardenofeden we use leaves (and lots of other natural things)
for making compost.
Today when opening some trash bags full of rescued
leaves from other people's trash, guess what we found...
more trash bags!
New trash bags and more new trash bags inside of bigger
new trash bags, all to contain nature that belongs in nature,
not confined inside of plastic inside of plastic to be thrown into the landfill.
How many bags does it take to keep these leaves in line anyway?
Not only do we use the leaves, we also save the trash bags
and reuse them for many purposes.
And nature thrives here when we utilize the leaves in our compost,
and when we leave them where they fall to build the soil and nourish the plants.
What do you do with the nature in your care?
How many plastic bags go to the landfill that you purchase at a store?
You for sure don't put your nature in there, do you?
It's wise to consider these things,
as even small steps toward a sustainable reality
will make a better world for us all!
the bagging of yard waste was banned in Virginia before I left the states but rather than just outright ban it they provided an alternative. The city bought a machine that could pick up masses of leaves that people could push to the curb during certain times of years.
Some people who wanted to bag their grass weren't really pleased about this but the city also offered tax incentives for people to build compost something or others in their yards for yard clippings.
I don't know what else we could use for bin-liners or trash-bags, but it would be nice if there was some sort of initiative to have them all be bio-degradable. Maybe some of them are.
wow! I haven't heard of a city banning yard waste.
We had a man who invented a large vacuum-type leaf sucking truck. He would suck the leaves from peoples yards then bring them to the @gardenofeden for composting! No raking, no bagging...
I've also not heard of a city giving tax incentives for making compost. More often I've heard of cities fining people for growing food in their front yard, and even taking it upon themselves to destroy them.
Having community gardens with composting facilities to utilize the neighborhood waste would be ideal. Hopefully we are moving more in that direction rather than more efforts to fill the landfill.

they didn't ban yard waste, just the bagging of it. I think it is quite obvious that we shouldn't be doing that but in Thailand a lot of people do. They like to get all high and mighty about banning plastic bags from 7-11 (i know I already ranted about that) but in the meantime you can put whatever you want in a magnificent number of plastic bin bags and no one really cares.
The changes need to be a bit more comprehensive over here if there is ever going to be any sort of meaningful change.
I have heard these stories about not allowing the growing of food on your own land. I could understand if it was a homeowners association, where the people are looking out for the value of their own properties but the city not allowing people to do what they want with their own property really gets on my nerves.
I am with you @gooddream! As the human race we have so much to become aware of and do something about. It's amazing how we are sleep walking and using the excuse that "that's just the way it is!" I hope in our lifetimes we see some true positive change...it all begins with us and living true to the awareness we have.
It's disgusting the control that happens by cities to the people in the community they are sworn to serve and protect. People are waking up however. It will be interesting to see what drastic measures it will take for change to really happen. I pray it will be peaceful, though have my doubts!
