Dark?
..............................................................................................................................................................................

It's dark inside the sun....apparently.

Why is that? Isn't it supposed to be super hot and super bright in there?

Sort:

Have you ever used an infrared camera to see in the dark?

Note there are dark areas in the infrared image. The dark color indicates the region is cooler than other areas in the image.

It is the same way for sunspots. Scientists looks at the sun in various wavelengths (parts of the electromagnetic spectrum) to understand what is happening on our sun. The average temperature of the photosphere of the sun is about 5,800 degrees Kelvin whereas the dark part of sunspot is about 3,800 degrees Kelvin.

Here is what the sun looks like in different wavelengths.

Have a great weekend!
Steem on,
Mike

..so the sun is cooler on the inside than on the outside....
is that right?

Sunspots occur in the sun's photosphere. The hot ionized plasma on the sun's surface follow the magnetic fields associated with a sunspot. As the hot ionized plasma is removed from the surface, the surface temporarily cools. Sometimes the magnetic field lines snap and plasma is expelled from the surface of the sun in what is know as a solar flare.

what causes magnetic fields?

Hmmm...on earth they are caused by the flow of electric current.

I didn't know magnetic fields could snap!

Not according to this it doesn't

Maybe because the sun is so hot and dense in those spots light does not even escape. That is my best guess, instead of red hot it is black hot since black is a combination of all the colors. Yellow is not as hot as red etc! Or the sun is just a figment of our imagination and it has holes in it! Lol

actually white is a combination of all colors which would be expected.
Black is an absence of all colors.

Thanks, wow I am worst at guessing, that changes everything. I’m looking into this as soon as my google brain starts back working? 18676243-0846-42E3-8D7A-91D00B326522.png

One obvious answer would be the black spots are the projectors in the way! LOL
