The little things that matter.

My new neighbor in Enugu, has made it a habit to always horn for me whenever she's living for work. Sometimes she'll wait for me to finish dressing up, so she can drop me.
She started this two weeks ago.

"You're a gentleman," she always says, whenever she's about telling me how she likes the fact that I keep to myself.
I'm not even up to two months here, and everyone in my compound already likes A.
Whenever I come back, you keep hearing "Hi A," from different persons.

Last night, I went to sleep crying over an issue. The issue brought back memories.
While my neighbor was dropping me at New Haven today, she was quick to notice I wasn't cheerful.
"What is it A?" she asked.

I forced a smile on my face, and told her it was nothing.
"Something is not wrong -- I'll call you later today," she said.
Have gotten six calls from her today, and she knows I've been lying that I'm Okay. I just didn't want to open up to her.
There is another man who greets me well in the same compound. He called me this afternoon and sounded worried on phone.

"Nkiru said something is wrong. What is it?"
I forced a smile on phone and told him it's nothing.
I may be scared of opening up to these persons, but I think I'm blessed to have these people care about me.
The show of care matters, and we take it for granted a lot.

Look around you and thank God for those who call to check up on you.
Thank God for strangers who just care, when they can ordinarily decide not to.
Imagine a lady I barely know saying "I'm glad your voice says you're okay, but we must talk when you're back."

I don't know about you, but I try to check up on my friends the much I can. I haven't done enough in checking up on people in recent times, but I feel I should try.

This little thing matters.

Hello. Firstly i have to say your pictures are lovely.
Secondly, from your write up i couldn't agree less that checking up on people is a very important activity we should make out time for..regardless of how busy we may be.
A case comes to mind of a very close friend that was battling depression to the point of considering suicide until fortunately i checked on him and then he opened up to me and the matter was resolved. Thank you for reminding us of this very important duty to ourselves.
