If you have time, try watching Grave of the Fireflies by Studio Ghibli. The story is about a brother and (much younger) sister during WW2 in Japan.

I have only watched it twice. I would like to watch it again, I even bought it in DVD, but it is so sad, I always end up crying a lot.
