Hello everyone, it is @estysam. I am here on this platform for my achievement task 3. My achievement 1 and 2 have been done and verified. Today on achievement 3, I am going to be talking about a very serious offence in writing and here on @steemit. It is PLAGIARISM.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism simply means copying or taking someone else's work without giving credit to or acknowledging the person. This means that you make the work appear as though you are the original source or owner. Plagiarism is similar to copyright, piracy, or piggy. Not only text are plagiarized. Images and arts can also be. Plagiarism is stealing and is regarded as fraud. It is a punishable offence.

Types of Plagiarism

  1. Self-plagiarism: This is a type where the writer publishers an already published work of himself without any change. This means that the writer uses portions or parts of the previous written work while writing a new work.

  2. Patchwork or mosaic plagiarism: This means copying ideas, text or passages from different sources and combining them as one.

  3. Global plagiarism: This simply means copying an entire text without proper credit to the original owner.

  4. Incremental plagiarism: This means inserting small amounts of a copied text or write up in an original text.

  5. Accidental plagiarism: This is when a person quotes and does not put quotation marks which shows that it is a quote or rephrasing a work by removing very few words.

How to avoid Plagiarism

  1. Use plagiarism checker to cross check your work

  2. Use quotation marks correctly to show that you are referring to a particular writer's work.

  3. Acknowledge the source from where you got the work.

  4. Always use your own words and ideas to write.

Consequences of Plagiarism

  1. One can pay heavily financially if caught plagiarizing a person's work.
  2. It can lead to loss of income used to publish a work
  3. One can be arrested and prosecuted for plagiarism.

CONCLUSION

Plagiarism has been on the increase for some time now. So many writers are unaware that it is against the law hence they still do it. Some other writers think they can't be caught in the act as humans may think the same way. Others plagiarize accidentally.

Plagiarism should be avoided totally for better write-ups. Use your own words, cite sources used, quote correctly when writing and plagiarism will be a thing of the past.
