I'll start this week's talk with pretty much the second best movie of this awards season edition to me (the first being Call Me By Your Name). I made so much fun of it because of its really long title but without even knowing what it was about I jumped in into it. What a great decision.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (directed by Martin McDonagh) is as good as its title is long. It tells the story of Mildred Hayes (played by Frances McDormand), a mother grieving her daughter's murder and rape who sets on a task of calling out the police department of Ebbing, Misuri - that is not a real place - and their lack of success at finding the killer of her daughter by renting three abandoned billboards on the road to her home, just outside of the little town, with somewhat aggressive messages, that call the attention not only of the town folk but also of the police officers of the town.
I don't wanna give much away but this is a seriously compelling and immersive film. The performance of McDorman in the leading role is absolutely stunning and the film totally catches you in the way Mildred executes her plan and all the outcomes afterwards. Also, the way it combines, perfectly, dark humor with drama is amazing.
The supporting cast, starred by Woody Harrelson as Chief Bill Willoughby and Sam Rockwell as Officer Jason Dixon (even Lucas Hedges as Robbie Hayes, Mildred's son), also does a great job at carrying the movie with their particular stories.
This is a film that showcases three very different characters progressing through the story of the movie to the point where they even become slightly better, particularly Rockwell's Officer Dixon, by the end of it. This is a film that tells a story from beginning to end without leaving any slack behind, it carries everything through to the end, which is very great and even surprising.
The interesting story and the compelling characters, played by a very talented cast, makes me give this one:
