Growing Things: Abundance And Scarcity

Documenting this journey of my thoughts and progress on this so far has been fun. While most people are starting to pack up for Fall and soon to be winter. I noticed something rather interesting down here. Tomato plants and a few other plants are starting to become abundant. It never occurred to me that perhaps summer was not the best time to grow. I might even have some things backward.

I know you tend to have your spring, summer, and even fall crops for many regions of the world. Down here summers are just humidity of death. While I had many successes it all took a massive beating. Even looking at this week’s photos everything is bit wilted and even dry to the touch. Short of some slight freezing during our “winter” down here on a couple of days that happens. I’m wondering if my journey is just starting to begin with all of this.

While I have not attempted to plant more seeds just yet the thought is tempting to do so soon. Once our 90 degree days start to cool off a fair amount I might start looking into that again. It might even be better for them not dealing with the kind of heat we get down here.

I’ve done my best to not do much research unless I hit a major issue along the way. Outside of the whiteflies that have been almost entirely the case. Now my brain is starting to question and wonder what could I do in Fall and should I? If I do I might just cheat and use google and find some of the sites. I feel I’ve done fair for just wining it as much as I can. Granted they are just plants and there no human element required for them to grow in the oddest of places on the planet.

Green Peppers

It has been over 3 months since I’ve tried to grow a green pepper. Finally, there is hiding among the leafs a baby green bell pepper. I almost missed it the other day but while checking on the plants I felt it. The camera did not focus in well enough. As such, a blurry image is not the kind of proof I want to use either!

The great thing about this is I’m starting to run out of red peppers to consume. So if I can get in a month or so something to replace that I’m all for it. Fall is a great time to start grilling and I sure will put some good grill marks on them.

Red Peppers

One of the things I’ve started to notice my lack of is creating any kind of stainability. While I have a few different kinds of pepper plants staggered in where they are in the growing cycle. I am down to my last 3 red peppers. They are bright red like the one you see in the photo with only a week or two at best guess remaining before I need to use them.

This plant is also lacking any flowering that I’ve noticed. Which means it will be quite some time before I get more if at all this year. Perhaps this will do great in Fall. If not I just hope to keep it alive. Next time I just hope to replace the metal pole I have to hold the poor thing up right.

The zip ties did a really amazing job in keeping branches from breaking off. This poor thing just grew so oddly in shape. I almost need to tie off each branch if it has anything growing on it to keep it from breaking. It seems a cage might be a smarter way to go. A little late now with how this plant is growing as that would just damage the branches I was trying to save to fit one around it.

Big Bertha

I was fully expecting this guy to have a pepper before the green peppers. To be fair he was last to the party but also lack any major setbacks this entire season. It has just been a slow steady growth. Keeping it away from other the plants has been working out well. I’ve only sprayed it a couple of times just to make sure nothing would be an issue.

I am starting to realize just how silly the small planter I have it in compared with how tall it is getting. I did have that thought before planting it but I just used what I had. No solution either at this time. Might be somewhat amusing seeing this massive plant taking over this section. While it sits in this tinny pink planter pot. It has at least drained really well so I am happy on that front as well.

Jalapeno

One thing that never came to mind during this project was a community. I had an issue as of late. Over 10 Jalapeno the last time I counted. There is no way I could use that many myself. Lucky for me someone local has a bunch of onions they are willing to trade. While no time or amount of exchange has been set just yet. I could see it being useful for knowing people in your area and what they are growing.

That is a win for this plant as well. It just has too many trying to grow all at once. They really have been slow growing far more than the first batch. The leaves are quite dry and even brittle despite it raining almost daily and me watering it this week as well.

Tomato

While it is hard to tell there are two baby tomatoes growing. This plant is still a mess from one issue arising after another this year. Least for now I have not noticed anything going after it. No beetles, caterpillars, or whiteflies.

Side note I know I need to remove that disgusting looking fly trap! I’ve not checked in on it for a while to see if it’s still sticky. With how many months it has been in use I highly doubt that. I can reel out some more and cut off the already used part. I also have some spares to use as well. I don’t mind a little extra protection when it comes to this one.

I hope everyone growing things had an amazing week. Must be coming up time soon enough for many to start harvesting the bulk of their rewards.

Still got me beat. My tomato plants stop being eaten but one is tall and skinny and the other other short and flush but no signs I'll ever get a tomato out of either one of them.

Awww I hope you keep trying! I'm keeping a rather close eye out to make sure nothing tries to take a bite out of the two small ones growing! I will have a tomato bigger then a size of a grape if I can help it!

I'll let them keep trying to flourish until the first frost does them in....though some may think I should just toss away the endeavor, a grape size tomato taste just as good as full grown one.

good to see you still on here! Just got high-speed internet and I am back about every day now. things are looking good. Keep up the good work!

I hope you find a community who likes you for you. Bidbotting like that eh not really a great way to go.

yea it is messy looking, and end does not really help. I like seeing big numbers sometimes though

Reading these posts have been a soothing experience for me. There's just something about you documenting your plant's growth and status that makes me feel calmed. Please keep up the posts and pictures going and don't let your little babies die!

I'll try. They are like babies almost in a way. I love them deeply and I find it fun just to check in every day or so to see how much they have grown. Always amazing to see how much changes in just a few days.

Exactly! One can notice the the relationship you have with your plants from just reading!
