Why are Fossils so Yunk?steemCreated with Sketch.

(Yunk is a broad term...in this case it means COOL)

Every good museum of natural history, and many others have exhibits on fossils. And why not? Fossils are living matter that have turned to stone, or left an impression in dirt that then turned to stone!

Kids love fossils....especially after watching movies like Jurassic Park. But did you know that fossils aren't that hard to find?? I would guess that 50% of the United States is within an hours drive of an exposed fossil layer.

Now not all of these layers will produce raptor claws, but they have invertebrate fossils like clams and snails, coral or even trilobites! Google your state and fossils and you can quickly learn what is nearby!! Though some good areas have been bought and are closed off to the public. Just do some research and findout!

And if you are adventurous, keep your eyes open for rivers and creeks that have exposed gravel beds. These are usually excellent locations to 'field test' for the presence of fossils.

Here is an exceptional place in Texas that I brought my son to.

We had a lot of fun and found some pretty cool fossils. Checkout more of our fossil hunt videos on the Healthy Family Variety Channel YouTube page!

I always feel so lucky when I find a fossil. There is a place at the Ohio River between IN and KY called Falls of the Ohio and you can walk out onto the huge fossil bed. I spent a whole afternoon there and only saw a fraction of them.

@themerrylotus
That is awesome!! So very cool when you can explore locations like that!!! Thanks for sharing!!

This is cool! I go rock hunting with my daughter - plenty of fossilised wood near here; sadly not so many animal fossils.

Am just about to post the new Signup for August's MAP. I'll add you to my list moved over from July; but might be easier to just signup again so I can reply to you there. :-)

Oh cool!
Thanks, will do!

Ty for the tip!!!

And so i wont be so off topic...I loved to "gather" stuff....i still do. While some prefer to lay on the beach i prefer to snoop for interesting stones etc. I did found a bunch of bird skulls when i was a kid...and a cat one...but those nver count since they were not old or fossils.... :(

Maybe i need to find an official site for our country and look where there main density should be. There is tons of rivers here....idk, will have to keep my eyes open.

Very cool. Let me know if you find some cool stuff!!!

That's one good instructive hobby you got there!
