The argument here is the Tanzimat reforms failed to bring cultural stability between ethnic Christians and Muslims . The new reforms did not grant Armenian subjects the civil rights and political involvement they wanted. The author details ethnic segmentation persisted, as the empires identity changed by nationalistic views.

This book is good source material for writing about the Armenian genocide, and the World War I period of the declining Ottoman Empire. With everything considered I enjoyed this book by this first-time author.

I found it very interesting that he drew the parallel of blaming the reforms of the mid-19th century. Also the rise of nationalism between Christians and Muslims as one of the key contributing factors that led to the Armenian genocide of World War I.
