The Book that uncovers the unraveling of the Ottoman Empire.

When looking for a cheap textbook that focuses on the collapse of the Ottoman Empire , look no further to the book “Tanzimat fails to heal a fallen Empire”. The argument here is the Tanzimat reforms failed to bring cultural stability between ethnic Christians and Muslims . The new reforms did not grant Armenian subjects the civil rights and political involvement they wanted. The author details ethnic segmentation persisted, as the empires identity changed by nationalistic views.

Ottoman Empire’s subjects embrace nationalization.

As the Ottoman Empire fell behind their European counterparts , the people began to undergo a drastic transformation under nationalism. The author focused on the rise of the Young Turks and their nationalistic views versus Armenian Christians. This was a combustible component heading into World War I. Both groups had differing views as to what the ideological and political position of the Empire was to be.

The author states nationalistic views of the Young Turks pushed them to initiate the first genocide of the 21st century. The Turks banishing millions of Armenians to the deserts of the Middle East to face starvation and death. In the author’s view, this was a move by the Young Turks to remove the undesirable individuals who do not share the same nationalistic views or the preservation of the Empire. The author deemed this moment a call for jihad by the Young Turks against the Christian population of the Ottoman Empire.

This book is a fine scholarly work that has been well researched, and would be a great component for history majors. This book is good source material for writing about the Armenian genocide, and the World War I period of the declining Ottoman Empire. With everything considered I enjoyed this book by this first-time author.

Conclusion

I found it very interesting that he drew the parallel of blaming the reforms of the mid-19th century. Also the rise of nationalism between Christians and Muslims as one of the key contributing factors that led to the Armenian genocide of World War I. So if you need a book for research on the Ottoman Empire in your college courses. If you just want to expand your personal reading for your Kindle library, feel free to get this book.
