Traditional Tacos and Soups at Pueblo Viejo in Huasca de Ocampo, México.
A couple of weeks ago we went to visit the little town of Huasca de Ocampo. This is located in the State of Hidalgo in Mexico. Just two hours from Mexico City. This town is listed as a Magic Town, or “Pueblo Mágico” in Spanish, that means that it’s a pretty and touristic town.
We went there because it is the nearest town from “Los Prismas Basalticos” which are very geometric shapes on the side of the mountain. We’ll talk about that in another non food post.
So we were hungry after our tour, so we went around to find where to eat. There are too many food stalls and we could not decide where to eat so we took out our phone and start digging in Foursquare and Google to find the best one.
After a few minutes of deliberation we choose “Portal Viejo” a traditional Mexican food place where you can eat soups and tacos.
There’s a lot of room outside but they sit us in a tiny table inside in front of the bar.
Here is the Menu. In one side are the soups and tacos and in the other cocktails. This place was really cheap the soup was $2.40 USD and each taco cost around $0.70 USD. Add ten cents more if you want it with some extra cheese.
I asked for tree tacos and a Caldo de Haba (it’s kind of a bean soup but the bean is yellow and a lot bigger it also has some chopped nopales in it).
My wife asked for a mushroom soup, very typical of the area. Both soups were really good and it’s a little difficult to describe them because they are very traditional and the only way for you to know them is to try them.
Now the tacos. I asked for one of mashed potatoes and cheese, another of Mole Verde (chicken with a green thick sauce) and one of Tinga (chicken with onions and a tomato sauce).
All of them very traditional and also I need to highlight the tortillas, they were really, really good. And I’m Mexican, so believe me.
Here is one taco looking directly to you.
And the last taco. I looked so lonely that i had to eat it.
