DECORATIVE MANHOLE COVERS IN FAIRHAVEN
Earlier this week, we took another trip to Bellingham Bay. Once you're at Boulevard Park, you can follow the trail into Fairhaven. There are a lot of painted murals on the walls of buildings, headstone like stones with inscriptions of what went on in that specific spot, and then, there are decorative manhole covers. I came across two this time, but intend to look for more on our next trip.
Gamwell House was built in 1892 and is considered one of the most distinguished Victorian Era homes in the Bellingham area. In 1972, it was added to the National Register of Historic places.
The Fairhaven Hotel was built in 1889 but was short lived. It closed in 1893. The Larrabee family lived in it in the early 1900's. It was used for several different purposes throughout the years, but on July 23, 1953, fire consumed the building. The remains of the burned building was finally removed in 1956.
What a sad ending for such a old piece of history!
In doing a search online, I discovered that many cities use decorative manhole covers; some with references to historical buildings and sites, and other, just pure artwork. I'm definitely going to look for more.
