A dreamy trip to Zagorochoria
My ideal type of holidays consists of a green scenery, with mountains around, rivers flowing, picturesque squares where I can drink my favourite greek coffee under the plane tree and walks into the woods. Zagorochoria combine all of the above.
My “base” in this trip was Papigo. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in Mikro Papigo with an astonishing view of Astraka (the peak of mount Timfi). I will always remember the feeling of taking breakfast in such a beautiful place. So quiet and calm with the best view I could ever ask for.
My father was a mountaineer and a climber and he has been to Zagorochoria several times, so he made a plan for me with the excursions I should do around the area.
Vikos was on the top of the list. This village is built on the edge of Vikos gorge. If you don’t want to stay just at the view, you can also follow a paved path that leads from the village to the Voidomatis springs in the gorge.
Tsepelovo is another traditional village (the biggest of the 45 villages of Zagori) with a picturesque cobblestone square where is worth taking a break to eat some of the most delicious pies you have ever tried -as Epirus is also known as the pie lovers' destination!
(Another pie lover friend we made there)
Monodendri and Aristi are also worth visiting. In Aristi there is The Monastery of Panagia Spileotisas (16th century) built near the banks of the Voidomatis river.
We made some stops during our route to explore more beautiful locations...
Last but not least the beautiful Voidomatis river. If you like sports you can enjoy a relaxing rafting descent in the crystal clear waters.
Oh, Zagorochoria... it is my favorite place in Greece, where I have been many times. And I will be there again this year! Thanks for the nostalgia and cool pictures. :)
