"Innocent until...always" - A Story in 50 Words
"Just look at him. I know he's innocent. Someone probably just set him up because they're jealous."
Some might call her shallow, but in that moment she felt like Mother Teresa and Gandhi wrapped in one altruistic bundle. She gave whatever money she could spare to help set him free.
Somewhat recently, many people donated money to help a man who happened to take a very good mug shot. That worries me because I don't think they cared about his innocence or guilt. And I don't think they would have put as much effort into helping someone they had MORE reason to believe was innocent but found less attractive. The random word was 'shallow' by the way.

We are all guilty of this in one way or another, judging a book by its cover. But I guess, we have evolved to do so, as we had to make split second decisions in fight or flight scenarios and we thus carry this quick decision making through to other areas.. How often have you heard someone say as soon they walked through the door, I knew they were not going to get the job or it was love at first sight... I guess that quick thinking is just engrained in us.. and we sometimes get it wrong..
Great story, I love ones like this that make me think..
Thanks. And I see your point to an extent. The thing is, I've noticed so many cases where people are programmed subtly to make split second decisions that won't help them survive. Think of all the children's shows that reinforced the idea of a link between attractiveness and innate goodness. It's one thing to lean on (and further hone) our instincts and another to give in to media-enforced biases. I guess it feels like we're getting it wrong more than we should.
Yes, you make some very good and valid points there... There is definitely too much persuasion, propaganda etc coming from the media in all facets of life... Is it any wonder the rich and powerful are buying over more and more control of these as time goes by..
