The extraordinary markets of Mexico City

Dear steemit community,

I am very happy and proud to be a member of this community and want to greet you with a story of one of my recent travels to Mexico City.

Besides the most common touristic sights I am always interested to check the typical local spots, where the original residents are spending their time and follow their natural needs. And especially in a vibrant city like Mexico City I did not want to miss such opportunity.

Luckily, I was spending some time with a local of the city, who knew the different markets in and out. We visited three markets in total.

From my point of view a market is always some kind of a copy of the local culture and especially as a tourist a market offers the best way to get an impression of the people and their culture. I, personally, do not need to travel 1000 of kilometers to see architecture, which I could see at any other place, eat food which I could eat at my local mall and buy stuff, which fuels the global mass consumption. That's why I prefer to go to the markets.

For me, living in Germany currently, it was interesting to see, that there were christinan symbols next to other believes. People do not only believie in one "persuasion" but in different ones. Here is still the original influence from the original population. Additionally, it interesting that also santeria, a religion with african influence, plays a huge role. There are special areas on the markets where you can buy rituals stuff as well as get advice from fortune-tellers.

Mexican food is famous and delicious. But I did not know that at least some mexicans like to eat worms, scorpions, grasshoppers and so on.

What I also enjoyed where the sections with the fruits and vegetables. There was a lot of stuff I never saw and the tastes were amazingly good....
