The effects of red meat

in #science7 years ago (edited)

From the beginning of creation humans have always loved meat. Some of us can't even eat a single meal without it.
Today i want to bring into notice the benefits and the dangers of eating meat, but i would be talking mainly on red meat as this is more consumed and loved by people all over the world

  MEAT

This refers to the flesh of any animal used as food. It has other meanings but I'm dwelling mostly on that one.

RED MEAT
Firstly, what makes a meat red?. According to food scientists and nutritionist, meats are red because they have or contain more myoglobin. According to the English dictionary this means A small globular protein, containing a heme group, that carries oxygen to muscles. But i simply define it as the cells which transfer oxygen to muscles in the bloodstream. The muscles which are used most are kind of or slightly darker which is the reason why turkey and chicken legs are darker than breast meat, because legs are used more, more myoglobin is present in it.

Now before i talk on the main topic which I'm here for i want to speak about the nutritional facts first.

Red meats are actually very delicious and highly nutritious. When consumed it gives and renders various nutrients to better, help the body to be strong and healthy.
Red meat is one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.

It is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and various other nutrients that can have profound effects on health.

A 100-gram (3.5-ounces) portion of raw ground beef (10% fat) contains (3):

Vitamin B3 (niacin): 25% of the RDA.
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin): 37% of the RDA (this vitamin is unattainable from plant foods).
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): 18% of the RDA.
Iron: 12% of the RDA (This is high quality heme-iron, which is absorbed much better than iron from plants).
Zinc: 32% of the RDA.
Selenium: 24% of the RDA.
Then there are plenty of other vitamins and minerals in there too, in smaller amounts.
This comes with a calorie count of 176, with 20 grams of quality animal protein and 10 grams of fat.

Red meat is also rich in important nutrients like Creatine and Carnosine. Non-meat eaters are often deficient in these nutrients, which can have negative effects on various aspects of health, including muscle and brain function

Grass-fed beef is even more nutritious than grain-fed, containing plenty of heart healthy Omega-3s, the fatty acid CLA, along with more Vitamins A and E (7, 8, 9).

Now on to the main event!!!
Though people may say they love meats like pork, beef, mutton, etc they don't know the great risk they are putting themselves into by eating excess of it.

NOTE: By eating excess it. I didn't say red meat shouldn't be eating at all because it's dangerous, but the intake of this meal should be reduced. And at least taken as per advice to the Department of Health, which advises people to consume 90g or little or less of red meat on a daily basis . A thin slice of pork, lamb or beef the size of half a slice of bread provides about 30g of meat.

THE EFFECTS OF RED MEAT
this is what i really want to bring to the attention of you my fellow steemians. Please take note of this and don't ignore as this might help you in one way or the other.

Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes and Death

The effects of red meat on health have been intensively studied.

However, most of these studies are so-called observational studies, which can not prove causation, just that some things are correlated.

There are some observational studies out there saying that red meat is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and death.

However, if you look at larger studies that are of higher quality, you find that the effect of red meat diminishes.

In a massive review of 20 studies that included a total of 1,218,380 individuals, processed meat was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, no association was found for unprocessed red meat.

In the EPIC study, a very large observational study that includes 448,568 individuals, processed meat increased the risk of death while no effect was seen for unprocessed red meat.

When it comes to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and death... it is crucial to distinguish between processed and unprocessed meat, because the two can have vastly different effects.

The observational studies seem to agree that processed meat (not unprocessed red meat) is associated with an increased risk of an early death and many diseases.

But even so, it's important to keep in mind the limitations of these studies. Conclusions drawn from observational studies tend to be wrong. The only way to establish cause and effect is to perform randomized controlled trials.

I want u guys to note this. I actually did my own research and heard from a doctor on radio that red meat increases the chances of cancer and should be avoided. Especially here in Nigeria, our all to popular suya when taken to much can increase the chances of cancer.

That's true. White meat like rabbit meat is usually preferred cos of relatively low cholesterol content.

Yes you're absolutely right. It's better for the health
