Money Sickness Syndrome - It's A Thing! Or Is It?
Have you ever heard of money sickness syndrome?
Me neither. However, AXA did a comprehensive study back in 2006. They found that more than 9 in 10 adults suffer from stress and other complications over money matters.
Ironically, from my previous incarnation as an Independent Financial Adviser, I remember AXA causing significant financial stress to many people!
The Money Sickness Syndrome Report suggests that the worldwide economic turmoil, worries about job security and the cost of living are taking their toll.
Interestingly, the report doesn’t just talk about stress and anxiety arising from money. It also covers many physical, mental and emotional symptoms. These include weight gain, depression and sleeplessness, reduced sex drive, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, headaches, nausea and diarrhoea, indigestion, a lack of appetite and a loss of sense of humour.
That last one, in particular sounds fatal.
It doesn’t just affect people without money. Wealthy people are also affected by what is termed money sickness syndrome. So, what’s going on?
Well, from the META-Health perspective, we need to look beyond the label of money sickness syndrome and into the specific meanings for the symptoms each individual manifests.
META-Health is a root cause analysis process that explores how your deepest thoughts and feelings create symptoms of ill health, both mentally and physically. Based on scientific evidence, it gives you comprehensive information on why you experience specific health issues and what you can do to heal yourself.
Money is such a significant, emotionally charged aspect of our lives that it can affect us in many ways. These could be at a fundamental, survival level. A fear of running out of money can be subconsciously linked to starvation or loss of shelter.
Many people link their self-worth to money, so it’s easy to understand how symptoms relating to self-devaluation could occur.
Perhaps feeling like your money has been attacked, such as an online phishing scam could lead to symptoms relating to having to defend your integrity.
Someone from a poor, working class background who has become wealthy might feel separate from their roots. This could lead to symptoms based on a separation conflict.
So, your relationship with money can lead to many symptoms. Here are a few examples of what might happen:
- A man makes a poor investment decision and loses his family’s nest egg. Metaphorically, this is a “chunk” of information that is too big for him to digest/break down. It is also to do with survival for his family (losing their morsel). As a result, he develops stomach problems, including nausea and heartburn. The bio-logical purpose of the increase of stomach acid is to more quickly break down and assimilate the "indigestible morsel" of information.
- A young woman can't complete her university education when her father dies. Money is an issue, and she feels compelled to marry someone that she doesn’t love. Her feelings of hopelessness cause her to develop hypothyroidism, which leads to weight gain and fatigue. The bio-logical purpose is that she has perceived herself as powerless and has become stuck in the recovery stage. This has led to her developing symptoms to avoid the stresses of life.
- An older man who has had a successful career in the city finds that he is increasingly being challenged and overlooked in favour of the “young bucks” and their ideas. He starts to feel that he’s no longer the master and is less potent than he once was. As a result he develops a prostate tumour. The bio-logical purpose is to increase the secretions of the prostate to improve both sexual attraction, and motility of the sperm. This increases the probability of procreation.
- The director of a medium sized company tells the staff that it is being bought out. Many of them to start worrying about their financial future as gossip and rumours circulate. After the buy-out happens, a round of redundancies occurs. Many of the staff feel powerless over this. Several of them are triggered into developing what is diagnosed as general anxiety disorder (you can read more about this in my article on the root cause of anxiety). The bio-logical purpose of this forward facing (fear of future) anxiety is to avoid situations where this "danger" could happen again.
- A talented guitar player can not make a living by it. She has to get an admin job to pay the bills. She finds this stressful and feels that her hands aren’t doing what they are supposed to be doing. The skin on her hands become dry, rough and pale as a result of this separation conflict. A few months later she gets a recording contract and feels great. Shortly after this resolution, she develops eczema on her hands in the same places she had the dry, rough skin. The bio-logical purpose of the thinning skin is to become numb to the separation. Once the resolution has occurred, the appearance of the eczema is actually the epidermis repairing itself.

What Can You Do About Money Sickness Syndrome Symptoms?
So, what can you do if your thoughts, feelings and beliefs about money are making you sick?
Happily, there are many things.
The AXA report recommended taking steps, including seeking help to take control of your financial situation.
This is good as far as it goes. The trouble is that the real issue is the subconscious patterns that caused you to feel out of control and caused the symptoms in the first place.
When you explore and change the limiting beliefs and previous shocking events that got you into the situation in the first place, you can restore your health. You can also take action to improve your financial situation.
One way to do this is a META-Health Analysis of the physical and mental symptoms that you are experiencing. This will give you a map of the specific events, beliefs and life themes that are keeping you sick, skint and stuck. It will also include a treatment plan covering mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social solutions to what’s going on in your life.

Super cool Sam - I just read @hungryhustle 's post and here you are ALREADY on it with @steempress !! Awesome. Very nice post, too, btw. And yes, I FIRMLY believe in the distinct correlation between dis-ease and our attitudes towards wealth and money.
As somebody working in healthcare, I can confirm so many of these things you wrote. It is unbelievable how many of out patients (when you dig a little deeper) have some kind of financial issue going on.
The conscious or unconscious issues flowing out of that are the consequences and I see those on a daily basis.. good post man!
When you wrote that line: "That last one, in particular sounds fatal.", I knew that you didn't lose your SOH. It also means that you are not stressed and living a healthy life. :-D Taking care of Meta-Health seems as important as physical well being. You are doing a great service by helping out people to improve their state of health through the call sessions. Cheers @eftnow!
