$10+ Payouts (Origin Story Part 3)
For the last two weeks I've been getting post payouts that are five to ten times larger than I would normally expect. I've been here seven months and never really expect to make much on my blogs. I try to write one good post a day and was averaging $1-$2 a post. Now I'm averaging like $10, which is pretty exciting, especially considering that Steem seems a bit undervalued right now at $1.27 a coin. The higher the value of Steem and SBD, the more we all get paid out... relative to the dollar anyway (yuck).
In any case, I wasn't quite sure what was going on until @fulltimegeek explained his bots yesterday:
My post It's Not About the Money seemed to get a lot of attention. @v4vapid has thrown me some huge votes; much appreciated. @lyndsaybowes resteemed it and made a nice comment, and I was placed on @fulltimegeek's bot list.
How ironic that a post about money being secondary is what catapulted my account to a much higher payout level.
Thanks! I need it.
I've never had a good job. Ever since I was a freshman in high school I knew I wanted to be a programmer. I'm a pretty smart guy so I just assumed that a job would fall in my lap one day. Turns out, high paying jobs actually have some competition.
The competition to acquire high paying jobs floods the space with incompetent pretenders that can sell their bullshit much better than I can convey my actual potential. I want to be a programmer, not a salesman. I'm an introverted recluse with crippling social anxiety. I've put less than 57k miles on my car in 15 years. How many people like me are out there just waiting for the chance to do something useful with their lives?
I am one class away from a computer science degree. Grinding through school was very difficult for me. I didn't see the point of 90% of the work I did. Now I don't even want the degree. I don't want to bow down to the old ways and say, "Look! I got your stupid piece of paper! Are you ready to give me a corporate job and exploit me some more?"
No
I'll take my chances right where I'm at. I have a garbage wage working a garbage job that should be done by automation. I guess as long as "slave" labor is cheaper I'll be offered this poor opportunity a bit longer. I look at my coworkers and see the wasted potential of the youth and exploited seniors doing physical labor in what should be their golden years.
I work 15-24 hours a week and I spend as little money as possible. All surplus goes into buying these pixel coins. Thanks again for all the support. $300 a month from this blog would literally double the amount I can invest back into the blockchain.
I've always been good with money but rarely ever have any. There's something about getting exploited by the corporate rat-race that bothers me. I've probably only worked 2 or 3 years of my life and I'm in my mid thirties. I've leveraged my abilities with money management to avoid working for the man at all costs. I've sacrificed my credit and played poker professionally on the side to avoid absolute poverty. I've been on food stamps for over five years now. Maybe ten. Who knows. I don't have a great memory and the A.D.D. isn't doing me any favors.
When I was a kid I was obsessed with money. I would horde change in random places; even walked around with a fanny pack full of quarters at one point. Like a raccoon collecting shiny objects I stored over $100 worth of quarters in my parents mini van. My mom spent those quarters one day when she needed the money. Thanks for the life lesson :D
In middle school I sold candy to students. The school sold candy for $1. What a ripoff, so I bought boxes at Costco. In bulk I could buy 36 whatevers (skittles, rolo, starbursts, kitkat, Reeses, Milky Way, 3 musketeers, etc.) for like $12. I bought candy 3:$1 ($0.33) and sold it 2:$1 ($0.50). How much money did I make with that 17 cent profit per sale? Thousands of dollars... you do the math. I even got robbed a few times (talking to you Logan) and started putting a padlock on my backpack. The school even told my dad to tell me to stop (he didn't).
There was even a strategy to it. I had regulars who would buy certain things. I had to guess what people wanted when so I wouldn't run out. The bulk of an item was an issue sometimes. I often had to carry smaller items so I had the room to carry everything. Chocolate would sometimes melt so I started freezing it the day before. Large packs of gum cost $0.46 and I could easily sell those for $1, giving me a better ROI and reducing bulk. Locking two zippers together wasn't enough because backpacks can be manipulated around them to get it open. Had to start doing three. My friend and I also learned how to pick my own lock by looking at the tumblers. It was surprisingly easy, but not more surprising than no one else figuring out how to do it.
The majority of the kids from my middle school went to the other high school, but my reputation still followed me. Instead of candy people were asking about drugs. I had a built in network to sell drugs in high school from a reputation of selling candy in middle school. It was hilarious. However, I never got into the drug dealer game. Sometimes I wonder how that would have turned out. I'm going to assume my chances of staying under the radar on that front were not very good, but who knows? Maybe I'd be a Bitcoin millionaire right now if I had taken that path. I thought Bitcoin was the coolest thing ever when I heard about it in 2009, but I had zero dollars to risk on an investment.
What would I do with millions?
I am not a greedy person and money in my hands is a terrible responsibility. I scoff at America's "temporarily embarrassed millionaires" carrot on a stick.
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”
― Ronald Wright, A Short History of Progress
I scoff at the whole crypto, "gotta buy my Lambo," joke. It's not funny. It's gross. The rich tread on you your whole life and when you finally make it you complete the cycle by doing the exact same thing? Fuck... you.
If I had the resources I'd try to help as many other people as I could get out of the situation that I'm in right now. Is it really that hard to not be greedy? I guess it is.
Steem is a place where I would really like to make a living working for the blockchain instead of the establishment. I have a lot of ideas but it's hard to think of something great that you can also accomplish solo. I even got close to finishing my Cards Against Humanity clone but now the wrapper that I use @steemj is dead... so that's pretty frustrating.
@fulltimegeek says he reverse-engineered a Java solution himself for the Steem blockchain with zero dependencies. I gotta say, I'd very much like to see how this is done so I can continue on.
Great post man, you inspired me to write a post about what your post gave me for inspiration. I know... kind of a weird sentence, but he, you can always check it out if you want!
A post inside a post... Inception! Leonardo DiCaprio would be proud xD
Hehe, he would indeed!
Congratulations dude
Just started reading your posts since everyone was talking about it, i'm liking it so far! :)
You don't have too, especially in programming! As long as you got a passive source of income like Steemit, etc... you can do your own thing and monetize it, programmers are the future gods, you can do what you want with your skills! I've actually choosen to go to veterinary college, but I still don't know if i'm not going to finish it and learn some programming...
YES! I totally agree!! People want the money to buy a lambo? I would probably buy 1 or 2 houses and rent them while staying with my parents, some would go to a dividend stock portfolio, while other would go to dividend paying cryptos, like master nodes (Smartcash for example), staking coins like STEEM, EOS, and other to coins like NEO, Ark, VeChain, spreading the money around to make it less likely to lose it all if anything happens! Financial Freedom! After it I would travel/help the world ! There has been an animal shelter in my town that needs money to build new facilities, i would love to give them the new facilities for free... The current ones put the animals almost under the hot blazing summer sun :(
I also spoke a little about the stupid 9-5 job mentality that the world is ensalved to nowdays in one of my posts... big corps and the government enslave us and we let them... people say things like "It's the way the world is..." well, i don't agree with this world so i want to change it!
Waiting for your Cards Against Humanity clone, I'm sure you will finish it :)
I don't have that much SP but here take my upvote, you deserve it! I feel much better giving an upvote to a small guy like you that doesn't use upvoting bots then to a big guy that spams upvoting bots to get on the main page...
I love the authenticity and vulnerability that you write with, it's a real breath of fresh air @edicted! You give me the goosebumps! And you deserve all the success in the world, someone I'd be proud to call a friend. I love your values.
Thanks! I'm just over here tryin to keep it real.
Awesome, 'cause that's what we need more of in this world.
Hey, congrats on getting the recognition you have earned.
Reading this, I see we are alike in many ways. I got burnt out at an early age working hard and never getting ahead, and have been self employed most of my life. Never having lots of money to show for it, but always having enough to live comfortably most of the time. Unfortunately am in the weird position to have to go back to being someone elses slave for the moment, I tell myself it is temporary until the market gets flooded with institution money (which is coming). Until then, I plan on using my little residual royalties to invest once I get the paychecks rolling in again.
I don't want much out of life. I am hopeful to get enough off the coins to pay off my debt slavery and buy a little plot of land that I can farm, leaving me with time to enjoy my pursuits (which are inexpensive) rather than work someone elses dream.
Reading your story of selling the candy at school reminded me of my son. He would take my old football magazines (yes, I used to actually be a "fan" of football) and cut the pictures out and sell them at his school. I was flabbergasted someone would pay for the pictures, lol.
Your dedication here to posting (real posts, not contests or trivial crap) is manifesting that this site does work as it is intended if one is dedicated like yourself. I haven't been following you for long, but I learn a lot from your posts. I know there isn't a large monetary reward to it, but sometimes knowing others appreciate you is very rewarding. If they keep this demo site going once the SMT market gets here, I will one day also be able to reward those like yourself in a manner that is more helpful like FTG.
If you are open to requests, maybe you can share any videos you have come across for beginners who know shit about programming. I squandered the opportunity to learn from my dad while he was alive, but find myself wanting to learn more as I learn more about blockchains.
Yeah I really just need to buckle down and learn the basics of JavaScript and Node.JS... that way I could do some basic tutorials for people looking to program on the Steem blockchain.
Honestly I think in a few years hardly anyone is going to be blogging on Steem for money. This platform is much more powerful than that. There will be multiple ways to earn an income. The closer we get to proof of brain the better.
You have spent 3 yrs in the field and you are already complaining about not getting a high paying job. I don't know what you were told as a kid, but getting rich is difficult. I work in software and have been working in this field for last 11 yrs. Out of those i slaved away for 7, last 4 have been good. Getting successful is hard and tedious. Just saying you are a good programmer doesn't mean anything. Build something, prove yourself.
Any job in the field would be a super high paying job for me. Highest paying job I've ever had is the one I have right now for $13/h. $20/h if you count my feeble poker career.
I think I'd make a better developer than a programmer. Problem with big ideas is that you need a team and investment. I have plenty of small ideas that could bring a lot of value to this platform... it's just a matter of putting my nose to the grindstone and getting something done.
That's a big problem though, because I often feel like I'm wasting my time. Perhaps I should invest in a tutor or find a partner that will motivate me. I gotta say, it sure is frustrating that Steem doesn't officially support Java especially considering that is the main language of Android programming.
I deployed my own site on sunday. It costed me 8$ and 4 hrs or work. That's it.
If you have a boss you're being exploited, plain and simple. When someone hires you they are making a bet:
Big companies win that bet 99% of the time.
It's time for crypto to come in and scoop all those profits from the middle men and dump them back onto the people that deserve it.
See thats the problem. Everyone can't be the boss. Its a pyramid. This mentality is killing the whole workforce. Even if you have your own business, you will cater to some client and in a way, he is your boss. Crypto's can't solve that. You can't just keep manufacturing digital money and hope everyone is fed. Someone still got to go out in field and grow the grains. Cryptos are not a magic wand. They solve some very specific problems.
The pyramid is a very solid shape that will not topple. The worst that can happen is that it starts sinking into the ground as the poor get pushed through the meat grinder. This is the shape of competition.
The blockchain is taking on a different shape. It's a cooperative economy. Perhaps the best analogy would be a tower. The problem with a tower is that it can fall over. Luckily, there are many towers and they are all connected and reinforce one another. It's a web, just like the Internet that it's founded on.
No one can be the boss; there are no bosses. Bosses are middle men and middle men have been replaced by smart contracts. Who makes the decisions? Democratic/Delegated consensus. Everyone makes the decisions.
To say that you can't automate basic needs like food and shelter just doesn't make any sense to me. The real question is how do you stop the population from growing out of control when basic needs are free or very very cheap. The governance of the future is going to be extremely different than it is today.
No one needs to go out into the field and grow the grains, and if they do, we can come to consensus to pay them a higher wage. This way it will be worth it to automate the process much sooner than it would be if we simply paid them free market wages.
Someone is going to come along and design a governance blockchain from the ground up that pays people higher wages for jobs that no one wants to do. That's when real progress will be made, because then it gives the entire community massive incentive to automate those jobs out of the payroll and reallocate that money elsewhere.
I'm sure it's hard to imagine a government that actually gives a shit about its citizens and uses cooperation to make the world a better place. It's not something the world has ever seen.
Here on steemit, do you think its co-operation? People with high SP have a louder voice. Just like real world. In mining process, top 3 miners with highest mining power control the network. World is not as black and white as you think.
No blockchain in existence has even come close to achieving the above idealism. I have never before been accused of seeing the world in binary.
Let's see where we are at in ten years when the blockchain can actually provide jobs that don't involve software development. This space is grossly underdeveloped. I'm simply projecting where I see it going in the future.
and also yes, Steemit is a total co-op. When Ethereum switches to POS will nodes be "upvoting" each other? No, all the profit will go to the person running the node.
If I hold $1000 in my pocket can I get the Federal Reserve to print me more money because I have stake in USD? No, but that is a thing here.
DPOS is opening up a whole new economy. There is digital gold just sitting on the ground waiting to be picked up.
I am glad you are getting nice payouts :D
Mate, this is a f..king sincere worldview :) I wish you good luck!
Hi edicted. I am really happy that perseverance is paying off for you. I wish others would have your patience and just build slowly. Everyone just expects today and aren't prepared to work for it.
Loved reading your post, mate. I wish I had the foresight to make a profit at school the way you did.
