Lake Tana - the largest freshwater in Africa and a stronghold of biological diversity: here live a lot of birds, dozens of fish species and even hippos. In Tanu, about 50 rivers flow into the river, and only 4 of them flow out, including the Blue Nile, which carries its waters to the Nile River. Local residents mainly fish and farm, their elegant papyrus boats are easy to spot in the coastal areas. Often fishing boats accompany flocks of pelicans, who have chosen several zones on the lake.

The reservoir was formed in the ancient tectonic trough, although it is considered fairly shallow: its maximum depth during the rainy season does not exceed 15 m. In the widest place the lake can swim for 1 day - it is 85 km of calm waters, but small boats can not easily cope with this distance. Tourist boats move slightly faster, but do not pretend to an increased level of comfort: often their sides and deck are finished with construction waste, and the roof is laid out of reeds. Despite the poverty of the local population, fishermen from the coastal villages are friendly to tourists and for a small fee are ready to show them the beauty of their native lake.
