The Quest for NT Christology

in #trinity7 years ago (edited)

The New Testament (NT) books had depicted that Jesus was divine. But his divinity was unlike those in Greco-roman myths. The gospels and epistles had shown that his divinity was purely Hebraic. The God of the Jews is in a sense his own father because he's begotten through the Holy Spirit, making him have special connection with God. However, the New Testament writers had seen what Jesus did not notice: Jesus was acting as God by being the Son of God which led them to believe that God begetting Jesus from Mary through the Holy Spirit was actually an Incarnation (deity becoming human). We read from the gospel of John:

John 1:1 The Word was God
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

And again, from a Pauline epistle:

Colossians 2:9 In him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells bodily.

My theory was that whilst Jesus lived truly as human, he was still very God. However, he did not possess this awareness. His disciples did notice these and they accurately regarded him as deity.

It was the mission of the next generation of presbyters to decide with the church on how they would understanding this such a great truth revealed. The development of the Trinity doctrine is probably tied to this.
