First baseball game of Negro National League is played (1920)

The Negro National League (NNL) was just one of several Negro baseball leagues established in the United States. These were developed during the time in which organized baseball was segregated. The first game of this league was played on this date in Indianapolis.

The founding was led by Rube Foster, owner and manager of the Chicago American Giants. It was founded on February 13th, 1920. It was the first league to last more than one season. With the way baseball is now, it’s hard to believe that it was so segregated, but even the segregated league lasting like this was a huge achievement and leap forward.

The league saw several teams, many of which changes names around during the NNL’s time. Some of the teams included the Indianapolis ABCs, the Memphis Red Sox, the St. Louis Stars and the Cuban Stars.

World’s first jet airliner makes maiden flight (1952)

The world’s first jet airliner, called the de Havilland DH 106 Comet, manufactured by de Havilland at its Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, UK, made it’s first maiden flight on this date in 1952.

Prototyping and test flights first happened in 1949. After a few years of this, it had its first maiden flight, that is, the first commercial flight with fare-paying customers and scheduled service, from London to Johannesburg.

Within the year, however, problems started occurring with the crafts. 3 of these planes were lost in a year in highly publicised accidents. These were catastrophic in-flight break-ups. Sales never really recovered, but new models were developed and the eventual Comet 4 saw a productive career of over 30 years.

World record for piece of art at auction at the time is broken (2012)

This world record, which was broken on May 2nd of 2012, was achieved by one of the paintings titled “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, a Norwegian painter. At a New York City auction, it was bought at a whopping $119,922,600.

The popular painting, described as “an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time” actually consists of four different versions, painted by Munch between 1893 and 1910. There are two painted versions and two pastel versions. One of the pastel versions is the piece discussed here.

In describing his inspiration, he said “One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream.”
