What vessel of transportation should I purchase/finance?

I would to say thank you for all your support thus far. I now even have an vote of 2 cents. Think I'll use it on comments here.

My 2010 Mazda3 2.5l needs a new engine. The shop quoted me 3,500 hundred plus 10% off. The Kelly Blue Book value is 3,400-5,000 on a the same vehicle and mileage. So my plan is to use to to my local mechanic, pull a used engine myself, and pay the job for less than half the other shop is asking and keep the car. Or even skip all this and sell it for about 1,500 on craigslist as-is. Taking advice in this aspect also. Sell? Keep? Project?

My next big boy adult task is purchasing a new vessel of transportation. I am asking for advice from the community here. I live on a dirt road in the country-side or the "boonies". I want a truck, van, suv, or sedan. I also am unsure if the best place to purchase is dealership, auction, or online like ebay or craiglist. I want to hear your good experiences with vehicle along with where u purchased and what you would recommend besides a Tesla. Looking for utility.
