Traveling North Wales : Flint Castle

This is Flint Castle in North Wales. Building first started in 1277 for Edward I as part of the "Iron Ring" of fortress's to subdue the Welsh.
Here you can see the Outer Walls of the Castle.

This is the back Outer Wall looking out over the estuary

Here you can see from the inside of the Castle the internal walls. They is also refurbishment work on part of the Castle wall itself. Seeing the modern day block of flats through the gap in the wall looks kind of strange.

This is looking down into the lower part of one of the towers of the Castle Wall. In these section you can listen to a commentary about each part of the Castle which are quite interesting.

This is a photo of the ‘Donjon’ Tower which is separate from the Castle and is the most intact part of the ruin. In this part of the building there is a metal walkway and a spiral staircase going all the way to the top of the Tower. At the top of the tower you can see the safety cage you stand in to take in the magnificent view over the estuary and beyond.

In this photo you are halfway up the tower. I'm not too crazy about heights so if the photo is shaky it me and not the camera :-)
