Birds with Strange Names : The Wheatear
The Wheatear is a dapper little upright birds that is found around the sea shore and sand dunes of the coast.
Male Wheatears have a pale grey back and cream breast which makes its black tail and wing tips stand out. You can tell the Wheatear by the black patch behind his eye and the white rump under its tail.
The female has similar markings but they are very toned down, so less colourful.
The Wheatear is a migratory bird that arrives in the UK in March and April and leaves again for its African migration grounds in August and September.
These birds mainly hunt for food along the shoreline looking under stones moss and seaweed for insects and any small snails or creepy crawly.
Wheatears build their nest on the ground in holes and crevices or on rock overhangs. But they will on occasions build in discarded tins and buckets within thickets.
The nests are made from grass and are lined with fine feathers or sheep's wool.
