I just wanted to take a moment to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. May the good things in life be yours in abundance, not only at Thanksgiving but also throughout the coming year.

Eggnog. Turkey. Pecan pie. It's the stuff that holiday dreams are made of. Is our national Thanksgiving holiday still about giving thanks? Undoubtedly, most of us give some thoughts to being grateful as the year winds down and we become reflective around Thanksgiving time. But those thoughts may be brief and transient as we focus more on the hearty meal and fun with friends and relatives that dominate the day. Some families make a point of saying a short prayer of thanksgiving before the meal, while others tend to overlook the spiritual aspect of this sensory-oriented holiday. Since we continue to call the holiday Thanksgiving, the days and hours leading up to the feast are an appropriate time to think about all that we have.

It is definitely a unique holiday. It doesn't commemorate a battle won, or honor a certain individual, not even recognizing a religious rite. Rather, it's a day to remember our blessings as individuals, and the collective blessing of being Americans. For sure, the state of our nation is anything but perfect… so many jobless and struggling, soldiers deployed and without their families… But, in the midst of the Civil War, Abe Lincoln declared a National Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. He paused to give thanks for life’s blessings in some of our nation's darkest times… I think that our thankfulness should be no less.

Sometimes, we have to just stop and marvel at our many hidden blessings to be truly thankful. May your tomorrow and days that follow be filled with the warmth of the season.
