We are failed by our wealthy elite.
Humanity and the world are badly served by the rich.
Those with enough resources to buy countries but spend their time amassing more and more only to invest in lawyers’ time to find ways to avoid paying income tax.
That’s tax on income - not tax on their entire estate.
And that tax on income only a fair percentage of what they ‘earn’ that year.
Tax that would help put kids through school and (in language you would think they would understand) in so doing increasing future economic outcomes.
Tax that would help keep the population healthy through free access to all for hospitals and healthcare (and, an economic no-brainer).
Tax that would help our governments and scientists fight climate change and convert our economies to be cleaner, greener and more efficient.
What pitiful, shitful examples of human beings are these that have so much privilege, so much ability to help, and all they concern themselves with is themselves.
Yes, okay, I generalise. Not all of the really rich behave this way.
Not all.
But so, so many.

Let's turn it upside down.
This is very dependent on the particular country, I think...as a Canadian, the income tax rate is now nearly 60%. Prime minister Trudeau has made some absurd changes to the corporate tax structure as well, so that many forms of income are effectively double taxed at a total rate of 80% - it is simply not feasible to run a business in such an environment. I left Canada several months ago, to countries with a more reasonable tax structure.
I generally prefer consumption tax to an income or wealth tax, as I believe citizens should be encouraged to produce and save, but taxed to consume.
