Short Story: Virtual Misery

This is a super short story I wrote on the bus this week. I was thinking about how as virtual reality gets better and better there will be "authors" who become famous for their immersive experiences. They'll have fandoms that could surpass anything we've ever seen because these worlds will be real enough to live in. Whole religions may spring up based on a single authors works/immersive worlds. The more I thought about that the more I thought about Steven King's book "Misery" in which an angry fan holds an famous author hostage until they write a book exactly how they want it. I don't actually have a title for it, not a fan of the one in the description, open to suggestions!

They brought her out again, it was nice even though she kept saying cruel things. She told me she didn't miss me, and that she thought it was funny that I'd be here forever. I know that's not true though, the real Julianne is probably in a lot of pain right now, also I won't be in here forever.

Someone will find me, or maybe these assholes will quit playing around and just kill me. Plus thanks to entropy at some point the universe will end. I don’t think they could keep me alive for that long, but it’s important to remember that this has an ending. My guess is he’s some angry fan. Misery style, didn’t like how I built one of my worlds, then somehow managed to get me inside of one of his.

This prick did his research though, I’ll give him that. The fake Julianne keeps telling me she moved on a married Brian, which honestly made me smile. Fake Caitlin said the same thing when she dropped by to visit a (week?) ago. The guy did his research, but he’s not that smart. None of his plots make any sense, all the characters keep contradicting themselves. Then he gets mad when I don’t break down and cry. It’s kinda funny how frustrated he gets, except that usually he cheats and hurts me when he doesn’t get the reactions he’s after.

I tell her that I love her, and that I’ll see her soon. This could all be some kind of weird Truman Show after all, shouldn’t disappoint the fans.
