"Ithaqa" Comic Book Update #176 Thinking About Nightmares
Completely unrelated to the comic, I've been reading Stephen King's "IT" and man it is fucking me up. The film freaked me out pretty bad, but the book is actually giving me nightmares. So far it's been a dream where I'm in my current apartment melded with my childhood home (which I never dream about). In this dream I walk the halls day/night and I'm completely afraid.
There's nothing explicitly to be afraid of, I just wander, terrified, sure that IT is going to get me. Eventually the sheer panic of waiting wakes me up, and I get to enjoy that hazy fear that comes with being sleepy enough to have a hard time separating the dream from waking...
Stephen King has a way of doing that to me, I remember when I read The Shining" in Middle School. I couldn't put the book down, partly because it was so GOOD, but also because deep down I knew that the nightmares wouldn't stop until I had finished the book, only then could I move on. I felt like his words were a spell trapping me, and the only way to break the curse was to see it through to the end...
After that I mostly read Stephen King's pulpy fun books. "Firestarter" which was essentially X-Men, "Dreamcatcher", "The Dark Tower".... Lately I got cocky, and thought I was a big boy who could face down the horror master without blinking, but he's transporting me back to Middle School. Back to waking up afraid at 3 in the morning for no reason.
God I hope I can do that to other people someday.
