Explain in your own words, what is IoT?

Red liner.png

To understand the concept of the internet of things (IoT), I think a brief introduction to the internet of humans would help in understanding the concept of the internet of things in a much better and easy way.

As far as the accessibility of the internet is concerned, smartphones have made it accessible to everyone, and that too at every time. Internet of humans refers to diverse use cases of the internet by humans like communication through texts or internet calls etc. So physical distances have shortened and made this world a global village.

Internet of things (IoT) refers to the interaction of physical objects over the internet and the exchange of data or information just like humans exchange data with each other. The physical objects that make use of the internet do not need the human brain to comprehend the data but they can do so on their own by making use of various technologies.

The Internet of things is the combination of multiple technologies like computing technology, artificial intelligence, wireless sensors and automation and the internet etc.

What impact does the blockchain have on the Internet of Things?

Red liner.png

Combination of blockchain and IoT would do wonders and push IoT to next level. The exact benefits of IoT would be discussed in next section however it is important to mention that this convergence would have positive impact.

The prime advantage accrued out would be decentralisation of IoT and so the problems due to centralisation like security issues and third party manipulation would be tackled .

The blockchain IoT would make the smart world even more smarter by remote monitoring of the technology.

The integrity of the IoT would be enhanced by strengthening the features like security and to be more specific DDOS attacks would be almost nullified . The integrity of the IoT nodes in centralised system is difficult and so hybrid blockchain would tackle this issue as well.

Dapps and smart contracts executes through blockchain would further hasten the data comprehension and communication and thereby make IoT comprehensive and smarter .

What benefits does blockchain offer to the Internet of Things?

Red liner.png

The Internet of things (IpT) has diverse use cases catering to diverse domains of life. This seemingly fascinating technology is not immune to limitations. IoT is vulnerable to security breaches and third-party manipulation besides having scalability issues and storage problems.

A combination of blockchain with the internet of things is expected to resolve the above-mentioned issues or limitations.

Blockchain Bing a decentralization technology and a public ledger system run on multiple notes, it would make the internet of things more transparent because data is stored only after proper verification. Moreover, the data stored on the blockchain is non-editable and cannot be manipulated by any third party.

Blocchain technology incorporation would resolve data storage issues as the former can store tons of data on multiple nodes. Moreover, the data storage speed or scalability would be enhanced dramatically.

The Internet of things is an amalgamation of multiple technologies and therefore interoperability is necessary for smooth convergence and working of IoT, therefore blockchain incorporation would do wonders.

Explain two applications of IoT and blockchain.

Red liner.png

The IoT (Internet of Things ) has numerous applications in the modern world. Some of the applications are as :

Smart Healthcare

Being a health professional, I can correlate with healthcare applications of IoT which is specifically called IoMT (Internet of Medical Things ). IoT has a marked presence in every domain of healthcare like diagnostics, therapeutics, research, etc. Let me give a more realistic and practical example:

The therapeutic bands are special tech devices that are put on by patients on the wrist. These bands measure the heart rate and rhythm of patients and in case of any heart abnormality like a heart attack, the therapy band sends a signal to the nearby health facility from where an ambulance along with health care professionals reach the patient's residence to perform timely interaction and save a life.

Let me give one more example which is of SMART BEDS. These beds detect the posture and pressure changes by patients and automatically adjust the position of back support. So the need for paramedic staff or attendants to operate the bed manually is eliminated.

Smart Home

IoT has found utility in various home appliances like hearing, lighting, cameras air conditioning, etc. Let's take the example of smart lights.

Smart lights are motion sensor-based lights that detect the movement of humans in the room and automatically turn on and when movement ceases lights are turned off. So these devices offer the advantages of being user-friendly and energy efficient.

Explain a blockchain project that relates to IoT.

Red liner.png

Blockchain and IoT have come together to boost the technology. Multiple projects have been developed in collaboration by IoT and blockchain. So we are gonna discuss a project names FILAMENT.

The filament is a Privately owned company based in the US, founded in April 2012, by Allison Clift-Jennings, Jeremie Miller, and Sally Carson. This company is famous for developing hardware, and software and providing services related to blockchain and IoT for enterprise as well as industrial IoT.

The filament is not alone on this mission of convergence of technologies but it is in strategic partnership with many other companies all of which work together and converge multiple technologies to develop a smart world. Some of the worth mentioning names are Intel, JetBlue, Verizon, etc.

Blocks USB enclave is an innovation of Filament to combat storage problems by converting USB devices to smart storage devices.

A filament microchip is a semiconductor device that is aimed at making machines smart. Through the incorporation of filament, microchip machines can interact with each other, and process, and comprehend data.

Smart automated vehicles were developed by Filament in collaboration with the University of Florida. In addition spaceships and satellites are also developed to revolutionize space technology.

Besides the above mentioned innovations , filament has also made use of IoT in healthcare , energy sector , business, smart home and work place etc .

Thanks

You have explained it well my friend the whole topic IoT with Blockchain.

The physical objects that make use of the internet do not need the human brain to comprehend the data but they can do so on their own by making use of various technologies.

Here I think there is always a need of human brain because other technologies can't be developed on their own but need a human. But at somepoint you are right and I think AI can make things better in future because it can solve things on it's own but not current AI but after it is fully developed in future.

and to be more specific DDOS attacks would be almost nullified.

DDoS attacks are the worse, they can jam your network for few minutes that are very important. Yes blockchain will help a lot in security of IoT projects.

The two examples Smart Homes and Smart Healthcare are best ones. Health is always important for not only one person or country but for the whole world.

The filament is a Privately owned company based in the US, founded in April 2012, by Allison Clift-Jennings, Jeremie Miller, and Sally Carson.

I am reading about this company for the first time. You have given the most unique project. I would love to do research on it.

I wish you best of luck for the contest my friend. Thank You :)

Here I think there is always a need of human brain because other technologies can't be developed on their own but need a human.

You are right but i have mentioned the words comprehend the data which is infact not required after development by humans and that's where the concept of IoT came into being .

Thanks fo your valuable feedback and precious time.

Thank you, friend!

I love how you began the impact of blockchain to IoT, it pushes it to the next level, there's no doubt about that. Some of the ways it impacts IoT is by making it decentralized in a way that it becomes impossible for hackers to hack into people's data on IoT devices.

Furthermore, it makes IoT more efficient as the possibility of delay with central server is eliminated and the devices can run all time through the peer-to-peer nodes on the blockchain.

IoT has found utility in various home appliances like hearing, lighting, cameras air conditioning, etc. Let's take the example of smart lights.

Yes, it's used in smart homes to control appliances. I have watched houses where claps are used to light the bulbs remotely, that's the power of internet of things. I wish you all the best dear friend.

IoT and blockchain are both advanced technologies. If blockchain alone has extraordinary advantages, then if these two things are put together, it will make it a leader in the world of technology.
However, it is also not apart from the weaknesses it has, but the benefits are greater than the disadvantages.
Many of the well-known companies have made these two technologies to be applied in their industry.
Good luck to you... 👍

Hi @drqamu

After 5 years on the platform I have recently launched a Steem witness - @pennsif.witness.

You may know me for Steem News, which is now nearing its 500th edition.

As a witness I am running a Full API Node and a Seed Node. Together with the @steemwow team I have also launched Press4Steem, a plugin to connect WordPress sites with Steem.

It would be great if you are able to support my work by giving one of your witness votes to @pennsif.witness.

If you have any questions about Steem, or if I can help you with anything please contact me on Discord at @Pennsif#9921.

Thank you
