First steps after hip surgery

Phisioterapy

A healthy joint must keep all its components healthy: bones, ligaments, capsules and cartilage. Trauma and degenerative diseases can generate pain and limitations of movement, so it is chosen to replace the joint with a prosthesis to perform normal functions.

Such a laborious surgery requires recommendations and physiotherapy with a lot of effort on the part of the therapist staff as well as the patient, so it is important at all times.

Firsts Steps

At the exit of the operating room the patient will come positioned with the lower extremities in high, that will provide in the help of the peripheral venous circle in the days of little mobility following the operation. The patient will be immobilized passively, lying on his back. Attention should be paid to the operated extremity so that it remains mobile and perfectly straight (the positioning of cushions under the knee should be avoided, but cushions under the ankle are allowed). Electro stimulations of the quadriceps for about 20 minutes are very useful for reducing inflammation and pain. We will also use cryotherapy and passive mobilizations of the hip to reduce inflammation and avoid vascular diseases.

Also indicated are assisted steps with the aid of a walker or crutches under the supervision of a physiotherapist, at least twice a day, from bed to chair and vice versa. Walking aids are of vital importance, as no more than 85% of the body weight can be placed on the limb being operated on.

And then:

Assisted walking and cryotherapy are continued. The following exercises are introduced:

  • Exercises for the buttocks: contract the buttocks for 5 consecutive seconds and then relax for 5 consecutive seconds. Repeat.
  • Exercises for the ankle: flexo-extension of the ankle. This exercise can be repeated many times throughout the day.
  • Hip flexion with the knee extended: extend the knee and lift the leg out of bed.
    -Exercises for the quadriceps: contract the thigh muscles, pushing the knee against the bed, count to 5 keeping the position; retract the thigh.

Each of these exercises provides sufficient muscle strength so that you can finally support and subsequently perform all the movements that with the "new hip" can be achieved.
