Rally News: Solberg back in WRC?

in #rally8 years ago

After testing Volkswagen's new Polo GTI R5, 2003 WRC champion Petter Solberg says a return to the WRC is possible.

“Honestly, the car was fantastic,” said Solberg, who has twice won the World Rallycross title since moving to rallycross in 2013. “It was really nice to drive, really predictable and easy to drive – this is so important for the R5 car.

Now I have done the test in that car, I really want to drive one in competition. I don’t know when it might be possible and we didn’t really talk about it yet with Volkswagen, but I would love to do that.”

Since retiring from the WRC in 2012, Solberg has been driving in the World Rallycross championship, and also undertaken some historic rallying. He is also busy supporting his 16-year old son, Oliver, in his endeavour to become a WRC driver.

With Oliver expected to get his WRC debut in Rally GB this year, Petter would love to enter the same round to give his son some competition, though in the WRC 2 class.

“Maybe doing Rally GB would be good. If Oliver does the event, it would be a really nice story to be competing there as well. Let’s see.” There’s always pressure if you are competing in the world championship. The competition is good there anyway (in the WRC2), but I would bring my own pressure to myself.”

A father-son clash in a WRC race, this would be a first ?
By the way, great pilot especially during the years with his own private team.

Petter Solberg is a fun guy to have in the WRC circus, with his positive attitude, but also very emotional when shit hits the fan :)
