Steem Monsters has already run a few tournaments successfully. They have had tournaments for all levels of players from bronze to diamond.

Bernie Sanders is hosting a New Years Eve Steem Monsters tournament with 2800 steem, 1000 SBD + other prizes up for grabs!

Yeah, I participated in one on the 24th. Got my ass kicked real good right with the first battle, but it was fun all the same ;)

but at least they were free entry.

Yes, free entry is always a plus. I'm guessing in the future they will have paid and free ones, paid with higher rewards and free with lower rewards, and I can get behind that. Trying out the free ones until I'm confident my monsters can handle more challenging battles.
